Clean, solid original 1998 Land Rover Discovery I. A California Landie of course, and a ONE OWNER DI since purchased off-lease by the same owner in 2002. Same owner its whole life. This is a harder-to-find LE7 seven-seater configuration Discovery, and it scores a 71! in AUTOCHECK out of a 16-39 rating range.
The 1998 is the fifth year of the Discovery Series I that came out in 1993 in Europe and debuted in the US in 1994, to its final run in early 1999 ( when it was eventually replaced by the DII in the latter part of 1999). One of the best DIs to have. It comes factory-equipped with the desirable CDL ( Central Differential-Lock) system.
Completely stock, and all original DII except for a mild 2 lift set-up with EMU coil springs and struts all the way around. In addition, heavy-duty Urethane bushings have been added for extra firmness and better handling. And a completely rebuilt steering gearbox makes for a very pleasant, steady ride!
This D-I has the factory roof bars as well as the factory Tow package. Nice radial tires mounted on a nice clean set of 16 TWR alloy wheels ( same as used in the Defender). NEVER off-roaded or abused. It currently resides in Northern California. Furthermore, it has the desirable extra fold-away rear seats, as well as its rear-access hydraulic step.
Stock 4.0L engine runs VERY WELL. No knocks, slipped liner nightmares or valvetrain ticking noises. I KNOW Land Rovers, and their issues. This LE7 is a solid driver. No overheating issues and it runs very smooth, and it should with a healthy engine. 169K original miles, relatively low for any Land Rover, and about average for a car of that vintage. BEWARE of low-miles Discoverys; chances are, they sat somewhere due to hidden mechanical issues.
No alterations or deviations from its original stock condition other than the added factory LR side steps. Automatic transmission shifts flawlessly into all gears. Four-wheel Power disc brakes, Power steering, Power windows and Power seats (they both work). Head-gasket job at 132K.
This is a very straight example of a Classic DI that looks good despite its vintage. The coachwork is in very good condition condition, with no dents or damage. Hood clearcoat has some fading from sun exposure, a common ailment on all Discoverys. ( I have an estimate to refinish it for $299).
It is completely 100% rust-free as expected, and solid throughout. Its original Oxford blue factory finish still shines nicely and it is in good condition considering its age. All doors, panels, hood and trunk line up perfect. ZERO RUST, common on many Rovers, specially East Coast examples where the elements and salted roads have taken their toll !
The original tan leather upholstery is in better-than-average condition and has held up very well. One small split on the bottom driver's as pictured, from age ( my local upholsterer can refinish the bottom for $150). Rest of interior, door panels, factory carpeting and trunk area is nice. Still has its really nice factory Land Rover Carpeting set in front and rear. NON SMOKER vehicle.
This DI has a clear California title and it is currently registered through 2015. FREE AUTOCHECK report available on request. It has a strong 4.0L engine, solid bodywork and clean original interior. It will make a nice original Discovery I, 1998 being one of the best DI years to buy, with all the electronic updates and mechanical revisions. Overall, a very solid, unrestored Land Rover DI for a modest opening bid and NO RESERVE.
