This car is a big middle finger to the commoners, and last night I just happened to be in that kind of mood.
For starters, the car has one of the prettiest interiors in all of automobiledom. It's comfortable, well built and gorgeous and would be perfectly suited in a Bentley or Rolls-Royce.
It drives like a 5, 800-pounder, but there's surprisingly little body roll thanks to the suspension gizmos. It feels way more planted than it should. And the ride is good even with these low-profile tires and big wheels.
The engine, shared with the Jaguar XFR, is outstanding--there's more than plenty of poke at seemingly any rpm. It's like driving a Mercedes-Benz AMG car that will go off-road if you're so inclined.
I'd take one of these over a Ford Explorer unless I was on some kind of budget (I doubt this and an Explorer are being cross-shopped much), though if I was, it wouldn't even be in my wheelhouse. I'd take one of these over an Explorer all day long.
That 5, 800-pound curb-weight figure really surprises me. I was thinking more in the low-5, 000-pound range as I was driving this big boy last night. The supercharged V8 easily gets it hauling (0 to 60 mph comes in 5.9 seconds, according to Land Rover). Power is available everywhere throughout the rev range (peak torque from 2, 500 rpm to 5, 500 rpm!), and the ZF six-speed gearbox is stellar with quick, seamless shifts.
The air-suspension system keeps everything composed and under control in corners. The wide footprint provided by the 22-inch rubber helps, too
