If you are looking for a Mark V, this is not one with stupid problems.. Only thing is by the time I over invested in it, I did not detail the engine compartment. It looks nice but it's not all perfect..it looks like a 68, 000 mile car under there. Under the hood is clean and nice but not show quality.
The vinyl roof was original, still soft..I love original but I could see the discoloration on the paint in the pic attached so I lifted the top and found the small amount of rust I knew must be there. Rust is like cancer so gotta cut it out before it spreads. So far so good. Then one night I had a dream that there was more rust no one could see, under the back window. We lifted the vinyl and sure enough, there it was. At that point, saving the nice original vinyl roof was not in the picture, I could tell.
So, by the time you get that far, may as well go all the way and buff the wheels and side trim…to make a long story short, I ended up re-chroming the grille surround and tail lamp bezels, crated and shipped the anodized side trim to San Diego to have it re-annodized, etc. etc. The color is exactly factory correct, vinyl roof material correct..the Mark V grille emblem was not perfect and I replaced that (since the grille surround was off so may as well..Mark V Emblem NOS, $250…)..so many little details...
I bought the car because it was beautiful original but then once you start one place you keep going because you're right there already, may as well. I wanted to keep it original. I thought all I would do is replace the fender, color match it and have a nice day. Almost $20, 000 later, there it was. That is the short story. The amount of detail beyond that is too much to write but I did take pics along the way.
So, by the time I did all that and the Quadraphonic 8 Track sounded so sweet (they made special 8 track tapes that divided the sound into four separate speakers), I love music and added an 1800 watt pre-amp and subwoofer in the back, replaced the speakers with no visible modifications and the sound is amazing. Nirvana. I'll send the video.
I moved to Maui almost a year ago. I might ship it here but really I should sell it..Maui is not the place for the Mark. What will be will be. I'm selling my stuff in LA now and will live here full time. I sold my '79 Eldorado, I have my '81 Datsun 280ZX here and thats good enough for me.
I should ship it here after all that time and work LOL. I wish I still had some of the cars I have restored over the years but sometimes, it's time to let go. Unless it doesn't work out that way then I bring it here…we'll see how the story ends:).
Even if you don't buy it, if you are looking for a Mark V you will enjoy these pics and the vid I will send.
