They
are only original once is the most appropriate description of this car. The
original owner parked the car in 1988 with 69, 200 miles on the odometer when
she was 76 years old. In 2011 the second owner bought the Lincoln and today it
has 82, 428 miles. This rust free car has been stored in a garage its entire life.
This car has undergone a considerable mechanical restoration. The goal was to
create a super reliable grand touring car capable of covering long distances
without tiring the driver and three passengers, all the while carrying a
considerable amount of luggage in style. This car runs and drives exceptionally
well and is in very good condition

Engine & Transmission:
The mechanics on this Lincoln are very well
sorted. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the exceptionally
nice sounding 430 CI V-8 engine under the hood runs strong and delivers power
whenever you want it. Power steering, Power brakes, cold A/C. The current owner
updated everything that could have created a problem (even though in most cases
the present function was fine) or made the driving experience less than
desirable. The steering gear box, the power steering pump and the wheel
bearings were replaced. The front suspension joints were replaced. The sway bar bushings, the brake lines and brakes were replaced including the
Wheel and Master cylinders. It has new shocks, including rear air shocks
to support all the weight that could be put in the trunk and maintain the
unloaded ride stance. An additional leaf
in the rear springs was added when they were re-bushed. With the new
shocks and stiffened rear springs the car no longer sways and wallows around
corners or has a delayed turn in response. It drives straight with no dead
spot or slop in the steering and it stops as one would expect with a new
braking system. The transmission was removed and serviced, the fly wheel
(missing a tooth) the starter and starter solenoid were replaced as was the
water pump, radiator, hoses, and fan belt. The alternator was rebuilt to
125 amps in preparation for a possible high output sound system. Updated carburetor with a new electric choke
carburetor (original in a box). The fuel pump was replaced, as was the coil, spark plug wires etc. The exhaust system was completely
redone. The air-conditioning system was updated and many components were
replaced. It has new 2” white wall radials. The result is that the
car starts on the first crank and runs strong and silent. There is a binder
with complete records for service done over the years. These are wonderful cars
with lots of options and it is great to see an example that has been completely
gone through and sorted by the meticulous owner. One of the best running
examples on the market today.
Body:
The body panels are
all straight. All original glass and chrome are in great shape. The car is free
of any rust or corrosion. The paint is great and shows exceptionally well, there are three small blemishes on the center of the trunk lid (see photos) but
the rest of the car is very nice. Since the paint is mostly original the owner
elected not repaint the car. This car has been babied and stored in a private
heated garage. The car presents very well. The exterior color is very nice and shows
the great lines of the car.
Interior:
The interior of this
car is unrestored original and is like a time capsule, I tried to capture this
in the photos but to really understand how nice this car is you need to sit in
it and smell the interior. Even the heal pad in the carpet under the
accelerator is not worn (original carpet is mint). The same is true for
the seating surfaces and the rest of the interior. All mechanical components and
gauges work as new. Power windows, Power seats, auto headlight diming, door
locks, electric antenna, cruise control and factory radio. The interior is like
being in your home living room while the car floats down the road. Instrument
cluster looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. The original trunk
area is very nice as well as the spare tire compartment. The new owner will
enjoy driving this car.
Documentation: A hard bound mileage
book came with the car that documents most of the cars history and maintenance
details of tune ups, trips made etc. On the dash is a plaque with the original
owners name (Barbara). In the back of the mileage book is her death
certificate. There are two large folders of maintenance records of work
done on the car (see photos).
Summary:
This
is a wonderful example of an American Car Icon. It is in great condition
and perfect for cruising or taking to car shows. Some might say that the
current owner went overboard on his spending to make this car nice but the best
way to enjoy a classic car is to buy one that has been extremely well
maintained and documented. If you are looking for a Lincoln this car is worth
taking a look at.
