In the spring of 2008, this Lincoln Mark V won awards at three National AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) shows. The highlight of these events was the May 17th show in Cumberland, Maryland. In that show, this car won the National First Prize in the Senior Division. This very prestigious award is documented by a gold-plated badge located on the front grill of the vehicle. Largely because of this, the car was invited to attend the November 3, 2008 Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance. The only way for a car to be in this particular show is to be invited. Included with this car are two copies of that event's magazine, which document that invitation with a photograph of this vehicle on page 46.
Bill Blass was an internationally-known fashion designer and his limited edition vehicles were distinguished by trunk lid badging as well as badging on the opera windows. In the 70s, Blass was immensely popular, and his presence at any event gave that event an air of elegance, style and panache. Clearly, his involvement gave the Mark V a status boost among those who considered themselves in the know.
While the Bill Blass Mark V's were among the most stylish vehicles available in 1978, Lincoln also broke through the industry standards, introducing new technology. A digital Miles To Empty gauge was a new option that calculated the number of miles a driver could theoretically travel before running out of gas. While crude compared to today’s standards, it was the first use of a digital gauge showing a mechanical function in any production car. The Quadrasonic 8-track tape player was another first in the auto industry. The predecessor to 4.0 Surround Sound, Lincoln was the first and only car company to offer this cutting edge technology.
