1989 Lotus Esprit Turbo For Sale!! I'm moving to Australia and I don't want to sell it.
This vehicle is a great car and I will tell you why you should buy this Lotus Esprit over the others I've seen for sale. I used to own a professional automotive repair shop and I've been a Lotus Enthuisist for over 15 years. I see customers buy these cars all the time and then bring them to me for repair. The cars look great in the photo and they pay 20K for the vehicle and then bring it to me and they often need crazy amounts of repair. Most of the time I see them and they have spent too much time sitting up. They come in with the original tires, belts, hoses, suspension etc. The customer starts driving the car and stuff starts breaking, seats start tearing and fuel injection systems start clogging from neglet, oil leaks on the ground. Don't make that mistake. I saw one Lotus Esprit for sale on ebay recently that had Goodyear Eagle GT tires on the back of it. Goodyear has not sold that tire in over 12 years. I can tell you what happens to 12 year old tires at 80mph. It also had sagging door hinges and the door would run the paint when you close it. Anyone who has tires over 12 years old must not be driving it.
Ask about all of the common problems with these vehicles. For example, Has the timing belt been changed in the last two years?, have the emissions lines been changed? how old are the tires? when was the last schedule c service? were the A/C freon seals changed at the compressor?, DOES THE VEHICLE LEAK OIL? does the turbo smoke? have ALL of the fluids been changed? when were the shifter bushings changed? does the clutch bearing make any noise? was the clutch line upgraded? when were the engine cooling hoses last replaced, may I see the service records, do the headlights work properly? do the doors sag? is there any rust under the vehicle? do all of the gauges work properly?, have the body drains tubes been cleaned out? has the car been garage kept? Have all these important questions about common Lotus Esprit problems been delt with so you can drive on the interstate or on long road trips with confidence? Most of all.. bring the vehicle to a mechanic to have it checked out before you purchase it and do your research! If you don't buy my Esprit make sure these questions get asked. If you are asking a car salesman these questions I would not believe him if I were you. Sorry to be jaded, just seen too many customers ripped off.
My car has 38, 500 miles on it, is adult owned by someone who has resources and was garage kept. It has never seen a race track. I drive it every Saturday and I've even won a few local show and shine car shows with it.
The Stevens body Lotus Esprit has a GM engine management system as Lots was owned by General Motors for some time. If you need a coil, injector or and engine sensor you can get it at the local Chevy dealer. Many of the parts are off the shelf and therefore the parts are available and cheap. I buy all of my Lotus parts from JAE. Compared to all other exotics this car is easy to work on too. The engine is a Land Rover motor, the tail lights are out of a toyota etc. My Lotus is all stock and not been modified. It has all of the fun of an exotic car with none of the bullshit!
The interior has no cracks, tears or rips. It has no DRY ROTTED stitching that will tear as soon as someone starts using the vehicle as the interior was oil and maintained on a regular basis. Is it perfect? No it's 25 years old but I bet the interior is in better shape than your neighbor's 5 year old Camry. Body and paint in good shape too.
