This car has a refreshed engine. I bought it from an older lady (she was 2nd owner) with a bad cat. She told me the coils went bad and ruined the cat which is a common problem. She had replaced the coils but couldn't afford the cat, so the check engine light was on when I bought it. I figured I could throw a cat on it when it needed to be smogged again. So I drove it around and autoxed it probably 5-6 times before smog came up. When I went to change it out I found out that this model has the CA only emissions setup, so it has a pre-cat right off of the exhaust manifold, and then a main cat under the car. In this case the pre-cat had really melted just about solid, it was almost completely plugged. Pieces of it had come off and then plugged the main cat. The engine could hardly breathe at all.
I looked at options and found that the easiest thing to do was to switch it to a federal emissions setup with one cat and the federal exhaust manifold. OBX stainless header is less expensive and flows better, so that's what I did. I replaced the cat with a Magnaflow universal. It passes smog at the tailpipe which is all that matters here in WA, better check with your state if it's going elsewhere. The car picked up a huge amount of power after swapping the exhaust.
I didn't realize it at the time, but by driving it with the cat plugged, the rod bearings were already damaged, and I drove it for another 6 months or so and then it started developing a rod knock. I just did rings and bearings on the motor, and honed the block. Took the shortblock to a machine shop and everything spec'd out and none of the rod bearings spun, so it didn't need any machine work. So basically it's a fresh bottom end with the original pistons. I did get all the carbon out of the chambers and off the pistons before reassembling.

The car drives GREAT! Rebuilt motor has lots of power, runs fantastic. Refreshed engine has about 500 miles, changed oil at 40 miles, will change again when it hits 500 and switch to synthetic. I have 4 cars and 2 kids, so this one has to go. Definitely the most fun to drive car that I've ever owned.
