Background
This is the
second EV conversion project completed by the Electric Vehicle Club at
Winchester High School in Massachusetts (our first conversion was an S10 pickup
that used a simple DC motor and controller). The costs of the donor Miata and the EV conversion parts were funded
with grants, while all the labor was performed by students under the
supervision of experienced mechanics and engineers from the community. The work was performed over a 5-year period using
the space and facilities of the former auto shop at Winchester High School.
Due to a major
renovation of Winchester High School, we are losing our work space, so the
Miata must be sold. In terms of the EV
conversion work, all of the hard work has been done, but several details have
not been completed. Following are some
things that will be left for the new owner:
No dash gauges have
been installed to monitor voltage, current, motor RPM, etc.Motor
controller fans need a duct to draw intake air from trunkNo heater currently installed, ceramic heater conversion recommendedTires have good
tread but they are old and should be replacedSuspension has not been alignedSeat upholstery
is worn (see photos)Convertible top
works fine but is in only fair condition (see photos)Body is mostly rust-free
but has a lot of small dings, especially in the hood and trunk lidPaint is
presentable but probably only rates a 7 out of 10 The ideal buyer
for this car would be an EV conversion enthusiast who has considered doing an EV
conversion, or has already completed a DC conversion and would like to step up
to an AC conversion. This is not a factory EV that you just get in and drive like a Nissan Leaf, with no understanding of how it actually works. This is a “project car” that is not quite
complete, and the buyer should have some knowledge of EV conversions and their
operation. There is a robust on-line support community for EV conversions and there are interest groups such as the Electric Auto Association that have local chapters.
The actual
range of this car has not been tested, but is estimated to be 30 to 40
miles. Top speed has not been tested
either, but it has been up to 40 mph on limited in-town driving. The top speed is probably around 50 mph.
Based on what
other EV conversions have sold for on ebay, we recognize that this car will sell
for less than the cost of just the parts that were used. However, this was an educational project and
we are now forced to sell the car because we are losing our space. The car is being auctioned with NO RESERVE, and the sales proceeds will be returned to the organization that provided the
bulk of the grant money that funded the project. Serious buyers can call Joe at 781-721-2848 for more details about the car.
