Up far sale is this time capsule 1988 Mazda RX7 convertible with less than 47, 000 original miles. Calling this car a survivor does not do it justice, it's better described as a heroic example of preservation and originality.
The second generation (FC) RX7, introduced in 1985 took styling cues from the Porsche 944. It leaned more towards grand touring than its smaller and lighter predecessor adding luxury and creature comfort. This first year 1988 convertible, with its normally aspirated 1.3 liter two rotor 13B Wankel engine (equivalent to 2.4 piston liters) epitomizes the Gen 2 car's GT appeal while the smooth shifting 5-speed manual transmission, four wheel independent suspension and disk brakes front and rear retain the sporting character that Mazda is renowned for.
About eighteen months ago I purchased this car from the original Arizona owner after it was lost in his garage for many years. I spent considerable time and money bringing it up to its original showroom condition. I made tedious repair to the window regulators and fuel sending unit. The AC was serviced. Cosmetically all it needed was a few hours of orbital polishing to restore the depth and luster of it's original red paint and some leather cleaner and conditioner to make it's charcoal leather interior look its best. Mechanically, the car has been serviced and tuned by a rotary specialist and it runs perfectly. New tires replaced the slightly used but dry rotted set that were on it when I bought it. It starts, accelerates, steers and stops as it should. This car is 100% stock, unmolested and never wrecked. Clean Autocheck report available upon request.
Mazda introduced many firsts in the convertible RX7. It featured the first fully retractable folding hardtop. The middle section was removable, allowing a third Targa style configuration. It featured the industry's first windblocker which effectively eliminated turbulence at speed, calming the cabin and extending the top down season. Speakers integrated into the headrests (adopted from the MX5 Miata) enhanced the touring experience.
Once fully sorted this car has not sat idle; sharing seat time among family members making trips to market and out to dinner, local meets, up the mountain and out on the scenic byways to numerous desert and western attractions. I have done everything I can to preserve this pristine example of an important era in Japanese automotive history and it is time to make room for the next survivor that needs my time and attention.
The Gen 2 Mazda RX7 represents two very real opportunities to collectors and enthusiasts; the fast developing interest in late 1980/early 1990's and Japanese cars in general. Take care of this car, drive it and enjoy it and you will never lose money on it and it will likely outperform the S&P 500 year after year.
This car is located in Scottsdale, Arizona (85254) and as it is also listed locally I reserve the right to end the listing per ebay policy. Car is sold on a clean and clear Arizona title as is where is with no warranty implied or otherwise. Pre-purchase inspections encouraged prior to the end of the listing. Ask your questions and get whatever permissions needed before bidding. Deposit is set below the maximum allowable because it is nonrefundable to discourage non-serious bidders. I will store this car for a maximum of two weeks after which fees will apply. I will assist with shipping arrangements for an additional fee.
