Built in Stuttgart, the car was originally purchased by Franz Schallweg, who served as an officer in a German infantry unit attached to an SS Panzer division. He was sent to the Russian front, and took the car with him to the Leningrad area during Operation Barbarossa. As the tide of the war turned in favor of the Russians, the entire Panzer division found themselves in full retreat. Near Lviv in Ukraine, the Mercedes` engine broke down, so Schallweg hastily traded his Mercedes for an Ukrainian farmer`s motorcycle and resumed his journey.
Schallweg was later listed as MIA and there are no further records of him found.
The Ukrainian farmer, fearing for his life in the wake of retreating German and advancing Russian forces, buried the inoperative car in a wooden crypt beneath his barn. There it stayed for the next 17 years, until 1962, when the farmer decided it was time to start driving his WW II prize. Unable to acquire replacement engine parts, he resorted to retrofitted another (non-M-B) power plant.
Decades later, his daughter (a professional translator) made mention of this episode to a German businessman (her client). Recognizing the historical value, he negotiated purchase of the vehicle. However, without complete documentation, the new German owner spent years trying to (legally) ship the vehicle home to Germany.
Finally, frantically waving a leaflet for a same-day car show in neighboring Finland, he found a border guard willing to let him drive the vintage Mercedes out of the country. He (and the car) never returned to the Ukraine.
The Mercedes-Benz was once again titled in native Germany. A Florida investor later acquired and imported the car, who then sold it to a well-known Collector in southern West Virginia.
It was subsequently restored
from the frame-up (see photos) using a more modern Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder gasoline engine mated to an automatic transmission, using front bench seat, and modern reproduction wire wheels (original, unrestored stamped steel wheels and wheel covers included in sale), etc.. While no longer completely original or authentic, this amateur rebuild is now a very dependable and driveable car that yet retains its historical significance.
The new owner may enjoy this Classic motor vehicle, as-is, or go the extra mile to bring the historic automobile back to original condition.
In any case, you will always have
something interesting to talk about, and a beautiful motorcar to look at and enjoy.
Good Luck with your bidding!
