Family records show that Robert and Margaret Hillis traveled to Europe to purchase this car and take it on a driving tour through Germany's Black Forest, to Innsbruck, Austria, over the Alps, into Italy, along the Italian and French Riveria to Nice and Monaco, France. The Hillis' then drove the car back over the Alps, into the Rhine River Valley and Koblenz, Germany, into Luxembourg and Belgium, and then to Holland before arranging for this quality German-made automobile to be shipped to their home in Binghamton, New York.
The Hillis family was destined to own a great German-made Mercedes-Benz. On their June 1964 flight from New York to Paris to obtain this car, they reported sitting next to Maria Dolores Elizabeth Schuschnigg, daughter of the Nazi-ousted Chancellor of Austria (1934-1938), Kurt von Schuschnigg. See the photos with diary entries for the family's purchase of the automobile. From Paris, the Hillis' took the famed Orient Express to Stuttgart, Germany and then hired a car to take them to the sprawling Mercedes-Benz factory in Sindelfingen (a Stuttgart suburb). Before setting out on their European tour in their beautiful new car, they toured the Mercedes-Benz factory, still recovering from near complete devastation in WW II.
After shipping the car to the United States, the Hillis' used it strictly for pleasure. Despite its age, it has less than 100, 000 miles on the odometer. In 2002, after the death of Mr. Hillis (Robert W. Hillis, Sr.) it was passed down in the extended family to its present owner near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The seller is the sister of Mrs. Robert Hillis, Jr. Therefore, the car has family provenance because it has remained within the extended Hillis family since its purchase in 1964.
Some restoration work has been done on this classic Mercedes-Benz with strict attention paid to authentic and original appearance. Seat belts have been installed to adhere to modern safety laws. The car body and rockers are near rust-free, and the interior is very clean. There is low mileage for a 1964 auto, at 95, 220. This is the fuel-injected 220 SEb, the higher quality car of this particular model. Detailed restoration records can be provided for inspection to a serious buyer. It is the family's hope that a sincere restoration buyer will be interested in this car. See it unveiled here:
As you can see from the photographs and the video, this Mercedes-Benz has been well cared for and kept. However, it is a 1964 model and, therefore, is a great candidate for further restoration. The engine purrs and hums. Listen to it, here:
