VIEW 30 PHOTOSIf you have arrived in the business world, you'll arrive everywhere else much sooner packed into one of these honeys. The E55's supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 generates so much grunt that you'll wonder if the car is accelerating or just spinning the planet under its wheels. This used to be enough horsepower to post land speed records, to win Indy.
Now it's used to hurdle two-plus tons of German taxi to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and demolish quarter-miles in 12.5 seconds (C/D, May 2003). We scoured the cobblestone side streets of Radicofini for metal-flake Corvettes to obliterate. No luck.
The E55's oversize wheels, quadraphonic tailpipes, and tasteful sill skirts beckon discerning adults looking for warp-speed wa-hoos! But the murky interior is about restraint. It's all black, as if a coal shaft had collapsed around you. Even the wood trim is stained the color of soot. The only dazzle allowed is the silver gauge fascia and a few razor-thin chrome streaks on the dash. The apparent message: With horsepower comes equivalent responsibility. The E55 is the supercar for Lutherans.
Indeed, the AMG isn't a car so much as a microchip-controlled thrill manager. Press the brake pedal, and a computerized pump does the work for you with artificial pedal pushback. Select a downshift with the steering-wheel buttons, and the computer up-changes automatically. Turn the stability control to off, and the computer instead just raises the threshold of intervention.
Fitted with the $1050 active-seat option, the E55's computer even takes control of the driver's backside, vigorously pumping up the appropriate bolsters to hug the torso and thighs in corners. It's like sitting for a back rub from a Soviet shot-putter.
With ungodly thrust and the rubber to deliver it, the Benz bounded through the verdant green grasslands around Cinigiano. The ride is firm—that's 469 horsepower, remember—and the brakes touchy but unfailing.
The harshness has been painstakingly polished out of the suspension in the best truce between ride and handling of the group. The body is screwed down, the stance unflappable even over roiling pavement. Still, computerized shocks and air springs (what else?) and a stout structure conspire to cushion the bad bumps.
Less praiseworthy is the steering. Working tires talk to your fingers with escalating steering-wheel heaviness and minute vibrations from their scrabble for grip. In the Benz, those signals are largely deadened by the insulated one-effort-for-everything mechanism. Eventually, the tires screech their situation directly to your ears.
The Benz is more likable on long plods down the autostrada, when the computer nods off (our optional $3010 distance-monitoring cruise control could keep it busy) and your right foot governs the rewind button for the surrounding traffic. Pick your moments carefully; Fiats come at you like tracer fire when you mash it.
Thin padding covers the Benz's sporty buckets, but the seat shape welcomes the human form. Armies of buttons parade in military-straight formations down the center console. It takes a knowledgeable finger to pick out the right one without looking. At least the climate control is simple. Back-bench riders get a little less usable space than in the Jaguar and Maserati, mainly since there's no room for feet under the machinery-packed front seats.
The E55 is an exhilarating machine and a faultless choice, but as in The Matrix, you'll enjoy life more if you accept the domination of the computers.
