Hmm, Where to start? First the car's history, I purchased this car from a person on Florida's west coast. He claimed to be a sales person at a local new car dealership and claimed he bought the vehicle from the dealership after they took it in trade from the original owner. I examined the car and the body was great, no visible rust, it ran and has 109k miles on the engine, the interior was only fair, the transmission shifted smoothly, so I checked all of the major boxes and decided to start this project. I removed everything from the inside of the car and the floor board was perfect (phew), so I sprayed it with an undercoat to protect from possible future rust, it is a convertible, I replaced everything on the entire that did not work as it should, carpet from another car, seat cloth for the drivers seat from a 92 model which does not match. It was only supposed to get me by until the car went to the upholster for a complete redo at a price of 450$, new a/c fan motor, new radio, (the old one is saved for the purist), then to the engine, I replaced all fluids, replaced thermostat, a/c system totally redone to new standards, new maf. I was concerned about electrical system so I had a certified auto electrician go over the car and correct anything that needed done. It took him a couple of weeks (I think mostly he was just that busy with other work).
The body has no visible rust and frame is great. it Does have bubbles in the paint by the right rear wheel wheel which will be some surface rust. I did replace all four struts.
The car runs hotter than I think it should. I have had a mechanic test it and he says it is fine, I just don't like it above 1/2 on the temperature gauge. I replace fluids and thermostat and it helped a bit but still not happy. I think the aftermarket fan is a bit too small and would probably change that next.
assorted dings throughout body, trunk is great, convertible top is NEW.
You will see in a couple of the pictures I have many parts which I have not gotten to yet. 1. new front sway bar. Interestingly, mercury did not put this part on the automatic transmissions, I pulled this from a used manual transmission car and all of the attachment points are exactly the same. I sanded and painted this item.2. I purchased a BRAND new short block, and I bought a rebuilt head and started a new engine rebuild. the old engine runs well but I really wanted to get this back to near original condition. you can see rebuilt injectors, water pump, tensioners, timing belt and gaskets. You can also see a complete service manual.
This is a really neat opportunity to do something fun. Ford of Australia built this car for mercury between 91 and 94 and used parts remain fairly easy to find. it is a four seater and fairly unique venture between ford and mazda in its day. There probable aren't but a handful of brand new short blocks in existence.
only rules for this purchase1. please don't part this out, I know there are a couple thousand dollars of parts on this and you can make some money but that is not what I want2. Ask questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability, I will also add any pictures you like3. have someone examine the car for you. craigs list has dozens on people happy to do it for you. I am located 10 miles from Orlando florida4. it drives but does not have a tag. I will deliver it in the south east us for 50$ plus 50 cents per mile up to 300 miles. otherwise I will help YOUR transportation company load the vehicle, it is a drive on5. Do not write me and say I didn't mention it has a ding in the drivers door, just an example. it is 25 years old and will show that wear and tear.6. there is no warranty, did I mention it is a 25 year old car and that I would answer questions and welcome as many inspections as you would like to have done.7, the price is 4 thousand less than I have in it please don't ask if I will take 50 dollars less the answer is no, I have a new baby and I would finish this project myself if I had more than 10 minutes to myself, I don't
