For a quarter of a century the Mercury Cougar has been prowling the streets.
The first Cougar, built in 1967, was based on the phenomenally successful Ford Mustang. Unlike the Mustang, however, the original Cougar came with hidden headlights, sequential taillights borrowed from the Ford Thunderbird and conservative styling.
Over the years more than 2.4 million Cougars have been sold, making it one of Mercury's most successful nameplates.
The Mercury division of Ford celebrated the Cougar's 25th anniversary with a limited edition model that offers a host of special appearance items, a V-8 engine and a modicum of luxury.
Mercury built just 4, 750 25th Anniversary Cougars; 250 went to Canada, the rest stayed in the United States.
Your eyes are apt to light up like a Christmas tree when you peek inside this 25th Anniversary edition Cougar.
You'll be greeted by a beautifully designed set of tan leather power bucket seats. A stylish center console housing with a T-handle shifter, an instrument panel with easy-to-read analog gauges, power sunroof, power mirrors, windows, cruise, tilt steering wheel, ABS, and a fully automatic air conditioning system.
Special 25th anniversary badges, embroidered floor mats, special key set as well as unique green paint and BBS brand lace-style mag wheels make up most of the items in the anniversary package, which added $1, 311 to the base price.
Rear passengers have plenty of room, and the trunk is big enough for a dozen grocery bags, four sets of golf bags, or numerous suitcases and other large items.
The Cougar is conservative, refined, good-looking and competent.
