This 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible has been repainted in its original Gold Glamour color, with black leather interior. I bought this car last summer from the previous owner's son. The previous owner had purchased it in 1999 and spent several years restoring it; however, he had never licenced it for the road and it was kept in storage for the past 12 years.
During the restoration the previous owner sandblasted and painted the frame, installed new floor pans, and installed new parts wherever feasible. The panels were painted while off the car. Many parts were replaced and are in new condition, including the bumper chrome, bumper filler panels, windshield, dash pad, convertible top and glass backlite, tonneau cover, carpets, etc. Under the hood, it appears that the radiator and all belts and hoses are new. Those parts that are not as-new are in very good condition, with the exception of a cracked left front marker lamp lens (pictured). The mileage was reset to 0 during the restoration, so indicated mileage is not original.
In getting the car out of storage and ready for the road, I replaced all 4 tires with new BF Goodrich T/A raised white letter radials, installed new reproduction Magnum 500 wheels, partially rebuilt the carb, replaced points and condenser, and replaced the heater core. I have driven the car about 700 miles with no trouble at all, and it is very strong and smooth.
Everything works as it should, including the full factory instrumentation with tach, fuel, temp and oil pressure gauges, warning lights, all courtesy lights and switches, sequential turn signals, all power windows, power top, intermittent wipers with washers, tilt steering column, automatic seatback release solenoids, and the heating and ventilation system. The electric clock is turning, though it doesn't keep good time. The car was factory equipped with the optional leather-wrapped steering wheel in place of the standard wheel with rim-blow horn. This is a non-AC car with Cleveland 351 2V engine and Traction Lok differential. The AM 8-track radio has been replaced with a later model Ford AM/FM stereo with cassette which looks much like the original and sounds good. All equipment as built is documented in the accompanying Marti report.
Overall, an excellent-looking, easy-driving, turnkey car to enjoy without any worries.
