Mercury Monterey Custom Police Interceptor (1970)

INTRODUCTION AND
DESCRIPTION
You are viewing my 1970 Mercury
Monterrey Custom. This car, while missing its original engine and
transmission
(yes, it’s a shame), is
a former Missouri State Highway Patrol, 428 PI (Police
Interceptor). The current powertrain is a
non-police
390
cubic-inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor.
This Monterry Custom otherwise still has the
“Interceptor” package and the first 5 digits of the VIN (0Z54PXXXXXX) tell the
story:
0
= 1970 Model Year,
N
= Ford’s
St. Louis Missouri Assembly Plant,
54
= Monterrey Custom 4-Door Sedan, and
P
=
428 CID (cubic inch displacement), Police, 360 Horsepower, 459 ft. lbs Torque, 1-4BBL Carburetor, and a 10:5-1 Compression Ratio.
Key features of this “Interceptor” included:
Heavy Duty Transmission
= “U” Code, C6 all-aluminum, one piece case,
“Police Maximum Handling Package”
= Heavy duty suspension parts, including stabilizer bars, springs, and control arms, and heavy duty brakes
(front discs and self-adjusting rear drums),
Air Conditioning
(system intact
but not producing cold air)
,
Heavy Duty Power Disc (Front)/Drum (Rear) Brakes,
Heavy
duty rear end
= 9 3/8 ring gear, 3.00:1 ratio (open),
Heavy duty cooling
=
extra fin-density radiator, shrouded fan that adjusted automatically to cooling
demand, and
“Certified” Police Speedometer
= 140 MPH
This Merc has had four owners
(including me since 2002) since it was retired from MSHP service in
1972. Somewhere between 1982 and 1988 its original engine and
transmission was lost/harvested. The current 390-4V runs fairly well
but I was going to put another engine
into it should I wind up keeping it (I have a 1970 460 cubic inch engine..it was rated even higher than the 428-PI that year). It has factory dual exhaust (
will require replacement soon
).
In 2003, I had the vehicle refinished
in its original “Medium Blue Metallic” (base coat-clear coat). There was no evidence of
rust, rust repair, or damage of any kind noted. The sheet metal, floors, trunk pan, frame – everything – were and remain completely
rust free.
The interior is original, however
obviously the carpet requires replacement (replacement carpet is due in any day
and I will install it or provide it to the new owner for instalation later). The dash is
straight and colorfast. The door panels are in very good driver
shape. The seats are in very good condition, but have some discoloration and minor defects around the buttons. The package tray requires replacement. The
headliner is original but has a minor tear.
You will need tires
before you can do
any serious driving or any speed or distance..they are just too old and have some
dry-rotting. All electrical systems work, but the
cigarette lighter and radio (original AM unit) do not function. There is no
police electrical equipment, except for the spotlight (
not operating
) remaining
in the vehicle.
This is a real P code Merc Interceptor from
1970 that fortunately still exists but again, unfortunately, without its legendary
powertrain. And finding a correct 1970 428-PI
(essentially a Cobra-Jet) correct for this vehicle may not be a good economic
proposition (that engine is worth more than the car potentially). Still, it is rare, cool, and highly original piece of American history and I hope it finds a good home.
AUCTION SUCCESS
CONSIDERATIONS
I have established a reasonable reserve
(reserve
will not
be revealed while the auction is running)
for this 1970 Mercury Monterey Custom police Interceptor. Please consider
bidding during the auction to the extent and level you deem appropriate and
based on whatever factors are important to you.
Note that I reserve
the right to end this auction at any time at my sole discretion.
If reserve is not met, I
may
provide
Second Chance Offers (SCO) through the Ebay system, but note that this is only
possible with people who actually bid during the auction. If you get
a SCO (which is a Buy-It-Now auction that
only
the seller and
the bidder to whom it was sent can access), it will
only come through
the
Ebay system (meaning it will appear in your Ebay mailbox) and it will be for
a
24-hour
duration.
Depending on where the recorded bidding
ends, and if the reserve is not met, I
may
also write the
high bidder(s)
through the Ebay system only,
one at a time
in
the order of their final recorded bids, to discuss the item. If I do not
hear back from a bidder within 24 hours after writing them, I will assume that
person is not interested and I
may
move on to the next person.
Encountering
non-paying or unresponsive bidders is a very disruptive event that makes
the auction experience unpleasant for both the seller and any legitimate
potential buyer(s). Please
BE SURE BEFORE YOU BID
that you have done whatever you need to do to
STAND BEHIND
the actual bid(s)
YOU MADE
and were recorded during the
auction.
BIDDER ELIGIBILIT
Y
Bidders with less than
10 (ten
)
feedback ratings may,
at my discretion
have their bids canceled
(I may or may not try to contact you
before canceling your bid)
and then blocked from further bidding on this auction
unless they contact me in advance
of bidding. Bidders who make and then cancel their bid(s) will also be
blocked
from further bidding
on this auction.
Bidders outside the
continental United States are welcome to bid but also
must email me before bidding
to discuss important payment and
shipping procedures.
Bidders who have won
any of my items in the past and then did not honor your bid(s), or have
made and then canceled a bid that met a reserve, or have agreed with me on
price after the auction ended but then vanished without any communication, are
not
eligible to bid.
INSPECTION AND
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Please ask any questions that you may
have that may not have been answered by this detailed listing narrative and
visual media attachments. My listings are constructed in complete sentences in
order to communicate my knowledge of important facts and to encourage
independent thoughts and then any questions from interested parties.
But respectfully, I
do not know what is important to you that may not have been discussed or
depicted herein unless you ask me
. Any and all relevant and appropriate questions you
submit while the auction is running will be answered promptly and as thoroughly
as possible
by email only
to ensure clarity of any
correspondences.
Given that this is a
used police vehicle,
please do not have unreasonable expectations as
to its current condition or future condition under your ownership. Also given
its obvious age, this vehicle represents whatever standards of quality and
workmanship that existed when it was built, so comparisons to improved build
standards of today's vehicles is not appropriate.
If you require it, please make all
pre-purchase inspections (at the sole expense of the bidder)
before
committing
to purchase the vehicle. Inspections can be done by appointment only by
you or your designated inspection service. Although I believe I have
described and depicted (with numerous high-resolution photographs and video)
this vehicle accurately,
please note that this vehicle is sold
as-is, where-is” with no express or implied warranties or guarantees of
any kind.
PAYMENT AND STORAGE
A $500 deposit is required from the
winning bidder, due electronically via PayPal within
24
hours
after the auction ends, to hold the vehicle
. I will not be accepting
trades.
Full payment is due within
3
days of auction
end via cash, bank-to-bank or wire transfer, or certified bank check (drawn on
a major US bank).
Clear title in my name is in hand and vehicle can be
scheduled for buyer pickup by appointment at anytime after full payment is
received and cleared.
I can hold the vehicle in indoor storage for 15
days (or longer, if weather or other uncontrollable factors emerge) at no
charge to the winning bidder after the auction (the charge is $15.00 per day
after 15 days).
