MGA
1500 roadster, 1959
Recently took this car in
trade via a Georgia
owner….he told me the engine and transmission was rebuilt 7 years ago. Can’t verify but I thought the oil pressure
was a bit low (at 40 psi when hot) so I removed the oil sump and checked the
bottom end…..crank was excellent and now has new rod and main bearings and new
oil pump. Runs beautifully, 45-60 psi
oil pressure, no smoke, excellent gearbox, seems to be much as was described to
me.
Body is very good as is the
red paint, most of the chrome seems to be new (grille, bumpers, etc.). And the dashboard is nicely painted to match
the exterior, all of the interior appears to be new, top is near new, same with
side curtains and tonneau, engine bay is nice and clean, wiring looks very good, and everything electrical works.
Has wire wheels, new knock
offs, radial tires are of the correct size and in very good condition. As is battery, exhaust, wood floors, steel
chassis, etc. Trunk is nicely carpeted, has a new jack and knock-off hammer.
Brakes were just done with
all new wheel cylinders front and rear. Cowl surrounds have been reupholstered, original steering wheel looks to
be in very good condition, has new seat belts, and all of the original gauges
work. Last owner told me the title shows
84, 000 miles but the odometer only shows 46, 000 miles so I suspect it has been
replaced.
As the wing beading appears to be new, I am guessing the fenders were removed
when it was last repainted. MUCH better
than seeing the wings beads painted or covered with bondo.
All in all, it starts
instantly, runs perfectly, drives very well, stops, steers and handles nicely, has all relatively new weather equipment, dash and interior are really
excellent, and this car would show well at a local concours (but please don’t
presume it is a Pebble Beach 1st place winner). The early MGAs were the prettiest with a
nice grille and rear lights. Isn’t gonna
frighten a Porsche driver in 0-60 but seems to move along the highway at 60, 70, 80 mph quite nicely.
