MGA
1600 Mk I roadster, 1960
Not exactly picture perfect ‘original’ but FAR better
than the average MGA (read on…….)
A very nice example, straight
body, very good bright red paint, mostly new interior, clean underneath, all
working original gauges, on and on.
BUT……..with rebuilt 1798cc
MGA engine and 45 DCOE Weber carb, FAR more performance. And far more flexible, easy to pull from
under 1, 000 rpm in top gear and, of course, the B engine is virtually
indistinguishable from the original A engine.
AND…….modern 5 speed Datsun
280ZX five speed transmission. All
synchromesh, closer ratios (actually closer than even the original MG racing
gear sets), and with a 5th speed that makes highway cruising comfortable, quiet, and far more appealing.
With a stock MGA shift lever, again, indistinguishable from stock.
Wire wheels in good
condition, disc brakes with new calipers, fairly new top, new tonneau, carpeted
trunk, luggage rack, premium wood steering wheel, new seat belts, most of the
chrome (bumpers, grille, etc.) is new, overall a very nice MGA.
With performance. In actuality, the original MGA twin cam was
rated at 108hp and was a disaster with frequent engine blow ups and holes in
pistons. The more sedate lower
compression twin cam was 100hp….probably about the same as this B engined
MGA. And with disc brakes and a 5 speed, one gets just about the ultimate all around MGA.
Oooooo, incorrect engine and
trans? Truth is, they made 101, 000 MGAs
and nobody is gonna retire on these cars ‘cause they probably will never be
worth a zillion or two. However IF one is
worried, I will gladly throw in a stock usable A gearbox and it shouldn’t be
too difficult to locate an original MGA 1600 engine to stick in the back of
one’s garage ‘just in case’ the collector car world sees MGAs jump into the
financial stratosphere (don’t hold your breath). Meanwhile, you can enjoy the additional
power, the slicker 5 speed, and the lumps of metal sitting in the garage ensure
you will never have remorse about your purchase.
It’s a great MGA. Runs and drives wonderfully, does all of the
right things and a few things a standard MGA doesn’t and can’t. If you have questions, you are encouraged to call me (during office hours, eastern time) at 203-377-6746. Thanks for looking and good luck!
