FOR ALL THE “RULES, ” BUT I’VE ALREADY WASTED A LOT OF TIME SELLING THIS CAR ON

This early
1974 MGB has just undergone a major cosmetic restoration and is in very nice
condition. To be clear, this is NOT a 100-point
concours-level show car, but a VERY NICE driver quality example that you can
enjoy cruising around town on weekends and will be proud to take to the local
car club events. Virtually
every visible component has been replaced or refinished in the course of a year-long
restoration, including:
+ NEW
polyurethane white paint with integrated clear coat.
+ NEW convertible
top. Top frame refinished and painted.
+ NEW
interior including carpet, seat upholstery, doors and panels
+ NEW 3-point
retractable seatbelts
+ NEW sun
visors
+ Refinished
mahogany steering wheel
+ NEW
mahogany gearshift knob
+ NEW shift
boot and chrome trim plate
+ Refinished
dash with all gages cleaned and polished
+ Refinished
center console with new hardware
+ NEW rubber weather
stripping, including all door, window, hood and trunk seals, plus the
windshield-to-body strip (which required complete removal of the dashboard to
access the bolts, so you don’t find this done very often).
+ NEW window
channel rubber, so there is no rattle and the doors close solidly. + NEW door locks with keys
+ NEW complete
headlight buckets
+ NEW chrome
trim strips on both sides of car
+ NEW MG
badges
+ NEW tires
+ NEW rear
axle rebound straps
+ NEW wheel chrome
trim rings
+ NEW hydraulic
master and slave cylinders for the clutch
+ Rebuilt
carburetors
+ Rebuilt RF
lever shock
+
NEW water pump
+
NEW high-capacity aluminum radiator just installed (runs cool in all driving
conditions)
+ NEW electronic
ignition (so you don’t have to play with points anymore)
+ NEW spark
plugs and wires
+ NEW fan
belt and water hoses (cooling system flushed)
+ NEW headlight
switch
+ NEW turn signal
switch
+ NEW Hazard
light switch and flasher unit
+ NEW turn-signal, ignition and high-beam indicator lights on dash
+ NEW bulbs
in all dash gauges
+ NEW complete
trunk carpet kit
+ …. And a
lot of misc new hardware
This car runs
very well, with 125 psi compression across all 4 cylinders, good oil pressure, no smoking and (unlike other British sports cars I’ve owned), it doesn’t leak stuff
all over the garage floor! The clutch is
good and the transmission shifts smoothly as long as you’re not banging gears.
All synchronizers work well. The brakes
are good with a solid pedal. Steering is
tight and responsive. All instrument gauges, lights and electrical components
work as they should. There is no radio
installed, although wiring is there if you wanted to add one.
Now for the
fine print …….
This
vehicle is 42 years old. Although I know
of no specific reason that you couldn’t drive it across country today, I also probably
wouldn’t recommend it. The car is sold
“AS-IS” with no warranty.
2. Body
lines on the car are pretty good, but not perfect. There is a slight bow on the
driver’s side of the trunk lid (see picture), which is a common MGB problem
caused by the design of the single support arm for the lid. The
passenger door has the common hairline crack above the mirror. I tried to
reinforce this internally before painting, but the only real fix would be to
replace the door skin. There is some body putty in a few spots, but there was
NOT any major rust-through.
3. Chrome
is in generally good condition with small pitting on some surfaces.
4. The
floorboards have been patched with a combination of sheet metal and
fiberglass. They are solid and
leak-free, but not necessarily pretty. (Frame is 100% solid, as is the trunk floor)
5. There
is no heater unit in the car.
6. The
trunk key is missing, so it will latch but not lock.
Again, if
you’re looking for a show car, this isn’t it. But it is a fun and reliable weekend driver that should be driven and
enjoyed. Inspections prior to the end of
the auction are welcomed and encouraged. Please email with questions or to schedule a time to come see the
car. Thanks.
