Up for sale is an original California delivered MGB GT. It was purchased new from the famous Los Angeles British car dealer “Le Mans Sports Cars” – it still retains the original dealer license plate surrounds - and has been owned by the same family ever since. These are the kind of cars that are increasingly hard to find. - very original and complete, matching numbers and correct mileage showing on the odometer. Always garaged and pampered this car is a joy to drive. Unfortunately it has seen little use over the last few years and it is now available for purchase. Their loss could be your gain. It was recently taken out of dry storage and fully serviced. Repairs include new rear brakes, rebuilt brake and clutch master cylinders. New flex hoses were fitted and both systems flushed and bled as well as having a new 12v battery installed and fuel system work. The carburetors have been gone thru and it runs very well, starting easily on the choke and settling down to a nice smooth idle when warm. It shows no sign of overheating and good oil pressure indicated on the gauge.
Driving this car is truly a pleasure. It rides nicely and the clutch is light but works well with no sign of slipping. The 4 speed full synchromesh gearbox shifts like velvet, no noise or any issues whatsoever. There is some creaking noises from the rear suspension that sounds like dry bushes or shock links, or it could be an exhaust mount. It does not sound serious. The brakes have a nice firm pedal and the car pulls up straight and without any unwanted noise. The parking brake holds well.
The gauges all work except the tachometer. The panel lights function as do the horn. wipers, and indicators , they even self cancel – most of the time! The side lights, marker lights and hi/low beams work, the license plate bulbs are out. The dashboard mounted Interior light comes on when the door is opened and even the windshield washers sound like they are trying to do something. The interior light on the roof needs a cover and bulb. Overall the electrical system seems very original and functional, no obvious modifications or “improvements” thankfully. there is a very interesting factory AM 8 track player with a FM converter loaded into it - a nice period piece.
The engine compartment is nice, tidy and as complete as it came from the factory. Underneath the car is unusually dry with no obvious leaks and has completely rust free floors and undercarriage. The only evidence of rust is in the front and rear lower fenders next to the rocker panels, which is very minor, as you can see in the pictures. Also on top of the passenger fender only, it has rusted where it connects to the body. All of these places are very common areas of corrosion on GT’s and on this car it is very minimal. With these exceptions the car looks to be rust free. There is no evidence of the car ever being in any kind of accident and the family cannot recall any incidents. The paint is an older respray but it has a nice shine and looks good with only a few chips and small scratches. There is some over spray in evidence when looking closely. The chrome is nice and bright – although one front over rider is starting to show a little pitting. The rubber is extremely good considering its age. The doors close so nicely and the windows work well. All the glass is in very good condition and is original. There is a full set of original keys the glove box and rear hatch lock but the doors do not, although the keys do turn. In the glove box are a complete set of back registrations and some other paperwork.
Inside the interior is excellent. The seats and carpet have been replaced and the results are unusually good. The original headliner is perfect. The dash is not cracked and the door panels are not perfect but much better than most cars this age.
These GT’s are really are starting to become popular again as people realize what a fun and useful little car they are. They always were a very smart car that looked classy and now they are different enough from today’s offerings to really stand out. This particular car would provide the new owner with a relatively inexpensive classic car that could be enjoyed for years to come and if looked after would only appreciate.
