MG's TC roadster sold well initially with American GI's enjoying it's sporty feel. Syd Enever and Alec Hounslow took a TC tourer and shortened the chassis five inches. Then they offered left-hand drive, rack and pinion steering, smaller 15 inch steel disc wheels, ( due to problems with the wire wheels), and larger bumpers. In turn the car was wider and 200 pounds heavier than the TC. Just like that, the MG TD roadster was born. Top speed is mid-70 range. In 1951 the TD received a new engine block and sump, as well as a larger clutch and a new flywheel. This configuration is commonly referred to as the TD2. There was no assembly line, the cars were hand made ash bodies with metal frames. It's mechanicals are robust and mostly easy to source. The cars were designed for maintenance of some items every 500 miles, so it is essential that everything is greased and oiled before putting it on the road. This was the best selling model of all the T series, and rightfully so as the handling, good looks, and comfort options were the best. The car came with a radio, however the radio, does not appear to be original, and designed to be in the glove box, does not work. If you wish wire wheels or a supercharger, the items are available, through Morris Garage, and others. Just as an original fuel pump which we got from England. The gas tank is 12.5 gallons, a red light comes on the dash when only 2.5 gallons remain. The car averages 28-30 MPG, if driven lightly. The cooling system is 12 pints. The engine takes 9 pints of oil, which should be changed every 3, 000 miles. The gearbox takes 1.5 pints of oil. The rear axle capacity is 2 and 1/4 pints. As you can see this is not an expensive car to keep on the road! The carburetors are twin, oil bath, SU brand. The body is made of ash wood so the car only weighs 2, 016 lbs., with the center of gravity very low, so it handles extremely well, and is a joy to drive. Somewhat rare where we are, ( high dessert of Southern California), car always draws a crowd at the car shows. Provenance available back to the original owner. We are the third owner since new. This car has only been driven in Southern California since new, so there is very little rust, mostly on the exhaust pipe. It was first registered in Santa Barbara, CA. We have enjoyed it immensely. It was bought by the wife, however my wife can no longer drive it. So now someone else can enjoy it.

“Purchased from the Automobile Driving Museum in 2012. Original "Silver Streak Grey" paint. Original in every aspect. I'm told the Vin# PAGTD214941, Engine# XPAG/TD2/14941, Chassis# TD14569 EXL/NA, indicate the car was built on March 24,1952. One of only 285 left-hand drive models made for export that year out of 29,664 made over a four year period. The TD II had a new engine block and sump, as well as a larger clutch and new flywheel. This vehicle is not perfect nor a fresh restoration. Minor scratch and a ding behind the left dr.,befitting a 63 year old sports car that has been driven. Odometer stands at only 20,096 miles. Convertible top and tonneau cover are black. Spare tire with hubcap and cover are present. Full car cover included. The side windows are secured behind the front seats. Recently replaced fuel pump with an original one from England. New brakes, brake lines and engine tune up prior to our purchase. Driven to local car shows occasionally. Always garaged under a cover.” |
