The
MG TC, and this version, the TD, is the reason why we have sports cars here in
the United States. Okay, so that is a bit of a hyperbole but we hope you get
the point. American service men & service women fell in love
with these little cars and brought them back here in droves. MG finally took
advantage of the popularity and brought them in themselves. Cars make a name
for themselves when they are featured in movies. We have Bond's Aston Martin, the Saint's Volvo 1800S and the Alfa Romeo from the Graduate. Today, we have
an MG, albeit a TD, that was represented in the movie Love Story. Oliver Barrett IV was disowned by his wealthy
father when he married a regular person, Jennifer Cavalleri. They fell in love
and tooled around Boston in a TC all year round. See dies (not from pneumonia)
and Oliver gets to deliver the famous line to his father: love means
never having to say you're sorry. What has this got to do with this car? Nothing really.
Except that this is a very sweet and capable sports car that has been loved by
its current owner for 25 years. When he dropped it off with us you can tell he
was parting with an old friend but as he said, it's time. Our young
master technician, Dan, who owns a twin turbo Audi A4 and a Dodge Neon that
belches fire, got the little MG TD running nicely. When he came back from his
test drive he had the biggest smile on his face. He said and I quote, I
don't know why but I love this thing. You can too for if you win this
auction.
It was restored decades ago but it is totally serviceable as is. The
interior is nice, the wood seems solid all around and it has all of the weather
gear you'll need this winter. The engine compartment is totally original and we like it that way. It has what looks to be an original tool kit, jack and some MG spare parts plus an original owner's manual. A sure sign this MG was loved by all of its previous owners. It is fully serviced by Auto Turismo Sport and
has no apparent needs other than a new home. The next owner might like to change the color if 2-tone isn't your thing. The seller has factored that into the final selling price. Frankly, it is cute and the paint is in decent shape so it isn't necessary to do right away. You may want to swap out the bias-ply tires that have plenty of tread but are too old to be perfectly safe. Coker Tire can set you up with period correct tires for not a lot of money. Now, the 2015 Sports Car Market
Price Guide says these TDs are worth between $24, 000 and $30, 000. They also
gave it a C-rating (because they made 29, 664 of them) but it is expected
to outperform the market with 5 stars. The seller's price factors in the cost
of a repaint only if you don't like the current color combination (again, it doesn't
really need it). But let's put increasing valuation aside, after all it isn't going
to make you millions. But you won't lose money either and you will have fun doing it.
We
absolutely encourage you to send a representative to Litchfield County Connecticut to inspect the MG top to
bottom. They will be as pleased as we are in representing it for the owner. It starts easily and drives very well.
