MG TD roadster, 1953
A beautiful, excellent running, restored car suitable for show and general use
As nice a TD as one might wish for thoroughly enjoyable road use……excellent body and paint, just slightly worn (with perfect patins) deep red leather, the most expensive tan cloth top, boot cover, and side curtains, mostly new chrome and trim throughout.
Engine: correct, original, recently overhauled engine….my tests, 140-150 psi compression in every cylinder, 65-70 psi oil pressure when warm, zero smoke cold or hot, quiet valves, transmission works well (good synchromesh, doesn’t pop out of gear), quiet back axle.
Has a new cloth covered wiring harness (the secret for long term electrical reliability), all gauges work, has seat belts, very nicely panted and detailed underneath and in the engine bay.
Even such nice touches as original signal lights and lenses, alloy rocker cover, and mostly new electricals (voltage regulator, etc.). All in all, a lovely ready to go MG TD.
What is best about these cars are they are easy to service and repair, parts are readily available, and tho’ over sixty years old, everything works very well.
On the road (if you never drove an MG TD), ride is simply incredible, smooth, not bouncy nor stiff, steering is superb….fast, tight, no play….engine isn’t terribly powerful but has a wide torque band, smooth acceleration, and within the parameters one might expect, quite lively. Shifting is a snap, car will easily cruise at 65-70 mph so, yes, YOU CAN drive it on the highway. BUT, around town or on the proverbial back country roads, on a nice day with the windshield folded flat, hard to imagine any other car in its price range that can compare.
The wood dash is a bit faded and one can easily sand/urethane OR cover it in matching vinyl. Depending on year of manufacture, both were available. Add a radio under the dashboard, maybe a luggage rack (for golf clubs?) and this car is ready for years and years of fun use.
