It’s good things only about the Works engine kit, if you can swallow the price ($6, 975, not including the roughly nine hours of dealership shop labour to install). For those who find the Cooper S Convertible’s 1.6-litre, supercharged four-cylinder’s 168 horsepower wanting, the JCW engine mods consist of a high-performance cylinder head with higher compression, changes to the supercharger, revised engine electronics, a free-breathing air filter and a less restrictive rear exhaust system, plus a limited slip differential. The extra 42 hp over the stock engine is significant considering the droptop’s 1, 290-kilogram weight. Punch the gas pedal and the little powerplant wails like a newborn as it zings to its redline. Acceleration is far more linear than with the stock motor, and rowing through the first four of the manual transmission’s ideally spaced six speeds results in a shove back into the seat with every upshift. Best of all, backing off the throttle produces a delicious backpressure burble through the twin chrome exhaust tips.
