In Japan, this vehicle was sold at a specific retail chain for luxury cars called Car Plaza. At the time of its introduction, Mitsubishi’s image was not that of a luxury car builder. The Diamante was a response to the Honda’s new Legend, which caught manufacturers by surprise when it appeared in 1986, inspiring the creation of the Lexus (Toyota) and Infiniti (Nissan) divisions, as well as various executive car class vehicles. Mitsubishi needed to compete with the Legend and the Diamante was the result.
The Diamante became the surprise hit of 1990. That is when Japan decided to export the car to the American market and compete with the best of Japan’s upper end cars.
To most Americans, the Daimante ES is a surprising car model. Americans are more likely familiar with lesser offerings from Mitsubishi. The Diamante ES is super smooth, luxurious (just look at those seats), has all the amenities. With its four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, it is quiet, economical and powerful. It is a real cruiser--at 75 mph on the freeway it is loafing along.
We bought this car for our niece who was going to school at Snow College and needed safe, reliable transportation in all weather between Ephraim and Provo. It never once let her down. We are the second owners. We bought from an elderly couple who had parked it at their assisted living facility in Orem and never driven it. They were too sad to come out to meet us so we dealt with their son. It is just as nice as you would imagine for being essentially one owner, low mileage, luxury car. Our niece is now an LDS missionary serving in Peru.
The Diamante was truly a diamond. It kept our niece safe, was economical, required no maintenance except oil change and new tires.
We paid more than we are asking and, yes, it is above the “book” value. But then what are you looking for? You can get cheaper, of course. But better, at this price, is debatable. At $4, 000 we don’t expect it to last long. You won’t be disappointed. The tires are new, the paint is the same that the factory put there. It is a no accident, original, (mostly) adult driven and well maintained car. You won’t have regrets. All season tires were new a year and about one thousand miles ago.
