Description:

1960 Nash Metropolitan Convertible
34, 935 miles, believed to be original
(may change slightly as we are still driving the car)
This ready to go convertible had an amateur restoration/rehab in the 1980’s
A low mileage car was chosen, and gone over. Once completed the car was used in parades and local tours. Car has been stored indoors since that time.
When I purchased it, the car had been used a few times in the last 10 years.
A few pumps of the accelerator, a little choke, and it came to life!
Once home, I went through the car and did the following;
For the brake system, all new wheel cylinders, new brake shoes, new rubber hoses as needed, flush the system with new fluid added
Chassis lube
Carburetor rebuild kit installed
Complete tune up
Brand new distributor with electronic ignition installed
All oils changed- engine, transmission, rear end, coolant
Replaced water pump and rubber hoses
New thermostat
New battery
Fan belt
Rebuilt fuel pump
Added electric pass through fuel pump with momentary switch for easy priming
(Car runs on mechanical fuel pump, electric pump only operates when button is pushed to prime the system)
New rear wheel bearings and seals
New radial tires
New rubber trunk seal
New rubber convertible top seals
New window seals
Seat belts
The car is equipped with a 3.90 rear end, allowing for more highway speed with less RPM’s, as opposed to the original lower geared rear end (4.22) which offered more zip around town, but limited highway speed.
Car will cruise at 55 mph in a comfortable RPM range, and will run 65-70 mph if you want it to.
The car shifts smoothly, and stops well.
I did all this work to make the car as dependable as possible.
My wife and I now drive it wherever we wish, without worry of break down.
If you choose to drive it in the rain, or get stuck in a downpour, the radial tires do a great job, as well as the windshield wipers.
The heater works well if you enjoy cool weather touring.
Driving with the top down, as you might imagine, is a wonderfully exciting experience!
You have to enjoy smiling and waving at the drivers around you though, as this car really gets everyone’s attention!
Before buying this car, I placed 400 pounds of bagged goods in the front seats, one side at a time to check for frame/body sag. I found none, indicating that the frame is solid and strong.
The car is very presentable, but it is not a high point restoration, or a show car.
The paint has many nicks, scratches, and touchups and is an amateur job at best.
The convertible top has a couple repairs, but looks really nice, and has been sealed to keep water out.
The interior is old and worn, with seat covers over the original material.
When the car was done in the 80’s, they chose to use earlier doors (parts interchange over the 1954-1961 models).
The original doors had wing windows, the current doors do not.
This may have been done to allow more room for putting your arm on the door with the window down.
It works and looks good. There are also adjustable exterior wind wings mounted on the pillars which accomplish the same end; to reduce the wind blowing in.
Horn and radio are not working.
This car is not new, or perfect by any stretch, but it looks and runs great for what it is, a nice driver!
This is the kind of car you can let the kids climb in and out of, allow curious onlookers run their hands over, and drive down a gravel road if you wish, with no worries about a scratch, or getting it dirty.
Show cars with perfect paint are really pretty, but aren’t much fun to drive if you have to worry over every little thing…
Car comes with several boxes of extra parts, and a spare engine, transmission, and tire/wheel.
Car has a new seat extender installed. I’m tall at 6’2 and this extender allows the seat to go 4” further back.
I can fully extend my legs while driving!
Selling to help fund my next old car purchase!
I have tried to honestly describe the cars condition and have provided many photos for you to review.
This car is located in Urbana Illinois 61802, and is available for your personal detailed inspection before placing your bid if you so choose.
Car is sold as is with no warranty.
Car is also for sale locally and the auction may be stopped at any time.
