Up for auction is this really neat 1955 Nash Cross Country Custom Rambler (Farina designed) station wagon. Born and raised in sunny Arizona before it’s retirement in a barn in Ohio, it had only travelled 48, 000 miles since new. The paint from the base of the windows, including the roof, is not only original color, but original paint! Yes, it does have some patina to it, but it is only original once in its life... The bottom half was refinished after a few minor scrapes and bruises were cleaned up. The chrome has mostly been re-done, and is extremely nice. The glass is all nice with a few very old stickers on them. The interior is beautiful and leans toward what it was like when new, in regards to pattern and design. The carpet has a few pulls in it near the passengers feet (see photo). The underside of the car is nothing short of Mint, Mint, Mint! You’d need to see it on a lift to appreciate it, it’s that nice. This wagon has the optional roof rack, gas door guard, and the beautiful re-chromed hood goddess. The outside appears totally stock, but has a set of new 15” Vintique wheels, stainless trim rings, and stainless hub caps with the Nash design on them. The wider wheels carry a new set of radial tires. Everything mechanical is new in the braking system, fuel system, exhaust system, and suspension. The car is quiet, rattle-free, and drives like a new Nash did in 1955, probably better with the radial tires. The dash is excellent too, and has no extra holes bored into it. In place of the large Nash radio knobs are the fuel and temp gauges. In place of the clock is a tachometer. The speedometer works perfectly with its special converter system, which allows you to dial in your correct speed while using the G.M. transmission. Oil pressure and charging gauges are the stock Nash gauges incorporated with the speedo, and work perfectly.
The original engine was tired, so the builder chose a 1960 Nash flathead six of 195.6 cubic inches, because the later design was a better engine. It was bored .030 over, has new valves, hardened seats, a Clay Smith cam, a turned and balanced crank shaft, a Petronics ignition, a (one of 100 ever produced) Edmunds finned aluminum head with dual re-built carbs. The new clutch and pressure plate hook up to an S-10 five speed transmission, then to an S-10 rear end. Incidentally, I just replaced the entire inside of the rear end with a new carriage, new spider gears, new ring and pinion, and all new bearings, seals, and axle bearings. The rear end was whining, but not anymore, it’s as quiet as when new. All of the mechanicals in the car are new, as it now has 49, 685 original miles on it, less than 2000 since built. Re-cored radiator, boiled gas tank, dual master cylinder, and the end-less list goes on. Yes, the seats fold down into a bed! That’s all I can think of right now.
