UP FOR AUCTION IS A GREAT LOOKING, GREAT RUNNING JET-BLACK 1968 OLDS CUTLASS SPORT, WITH A BRAND-NEW, FULLY REBUILT 1970 455 ENGINE (FROM AN OLDS TORONADO) AND TURBO 400 TRANSMISSION. I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE IDEA OF PARTING WAYS WITH THIS CAR, BUT BETWEEN LOOSING MY STORAGE AND WORK GETTING IN THE WAY OF ENJOYING THE CAR, IT WOULD BE BETTER OFF IN THE HANDS OF SOMEONE WHO IS ABLE TO CARE FOR AND ENJOY IT. RESERVE IS SET VERY LOW, CONSIDERING ALL THE WORK THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE AND ALL THE MONEY ALREADY INVESTED. THIS CUTLASS IS KEPT IN DRY STORAGE YEAR ROUND. IT'S NOT A SHOW CAR YET, BUT IS A VERY STRAIGHT AND CLEAN DRIVER. I HAVE A FEW MORE PICTURES NOT SEEN HERE OF THE UNDERSIDE, ETC. THAT I CAN EMAIL. HERE'S THE BREAKDOWN:
DRIVETRAIN:
ENGINE/TRANSMISSION WORK ON THIS CAR WAS COMPLETED BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. THE ENGINE HAD ZERO MILES ON IT WHEN I TOOK POSESSION OF THE CAR IN MID-2014, AND I'VE ONLY PUT LESS THAN 100 MILES ON IT SINCE. SINCE THE ENGINE IS STILL BREAKING IN, THEY WERE AN EASY 100 MILES. IT'S NEAR-STOCK REBUILD, WITH A 60-THOUSANDS OVERBORE, MELLING SELECT PERFORMANCE CAMSHAFT, EDELBROCK INTAKE AND TOPPED WITH A BRAND NEW HOLLEY 870 CFM STREET AVENGER CARB W/ ELECTRIC CHOKE. THE CAR RUNS WELL WITH THIS CARB RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX, BUT THE CARB STILL NEEDS FINE-TUNING FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE/DRIVEABILITY. STARTER, ALTERNATOR AND OTHER FRONTAL ENGINE ACCESSORIES AND BELTS, HOSES AND BATTERY ARE ALL BRAND NEW. ALSO INSTALLED DURING THE BUILD IS A BRAND NEW ALUMINUM RADIATOR. THE ENGINE RUNS COOL, WITH NO SIGNS OF EVER GETTING HOT. THE EXHAUST IS A PYPES MANIFOLD-BACK STAINLESS-STEEL 2.5-INCH SYTEM WITH A CROSSOVER. IT SOUNDS GREAT, WITH A NICE DEEP TONE. THE PREVIOUS OWNER WAS GOING TO RUN THE TAILPIPES OUT OF A REPRODUCTION 442 REAR BUMPER, BUT NEVER GOT THAT FAR, SO THE EXHAUST ENDS RIGHT BEFORE THE REAR AXLE. I HAVE A YOUTUBE LINK TO EMAIL (WASN'T ABLE TO POST IT FOR SOME REASON) OF A QUICK START-UP-AND-RUN VIDEO I SHOT WHILE TAKING THE PICTURES OF THE CAR. THE TURBO 400 TRANSMISSION WAS RECENTLY REBUILT, WITH A SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL TORQUE CONVERTER. IT SHIFTS UP THROUGH THE GEARS AND OPERATES EXACTLY HOW IT SHOULD. THE REAR AXLE IS A 12-BOLT WITH POSI TRACTION. ALL OF THE FRONT STEERING LINKAGE IS BRAND NEW AND THE SUSPENSION/BRAKES ARE ALL IN GOOD SHAPE.
TIRES AND WHEELS:
BOTH TIRES AND WHEELS ARE BRAND NEW, WITH LESS THAN 100 MILES. WHEELS ARE 17X9 CRAGAR SOFT 8's ALL AROUND, WITH BF GOODRICH SPORT COMP 2 PERFORMANCE TIRES — 275'S IN THE REAR AND 255'S UP FRONT. THEY FIT GREAT, AND IN MY OPINION, LOOK RIGHT ON THIS CAR.
BODY:
THE PAINT JOB IS AN OLDER ONE, WITH SOME BLEMISHES, CHIPS AND OTHER SMALL BOO-BOO'S—AND IT'S PROBABLY A LITTLE BETTER LOOKING IN THE PICTURES THAN IT REALLY IS—BUT THAT SAID, IT STILL SHINES UP WELL AND PRESENTS NICELY. THE BIGGEST OF THE BODY BOO-BOO'S IS SOME PAINT-BUBBLING AROUND THE REAR WHEEL-OPENING LIP—PRESUMABLY FROM THE FACTORY STAINLESS WHEEL-ARCH TRIM THAT WAS ONCE THERE AND PROBABLY HOLDING MOISTURE (SEE PICTURES.) IT'S NOT READILY APPARENT AT FIRST GLANCE, BUT THERE NONETHELESS. THE QUARTER PANELS ARE ORIGINAL TO THE CAR AND SOLID EVERYWHERE ELSE. A GOOD PAINT GUY MIGHT BE ABLE TO BLEND IN SOME NEW PAINT BELOW THE WHEEL-ARCH SEAM FOR A FIX. COULD ALSO BE COVERED UP WITH A NEW SET OF STAINLESS WHEEL-OPENING TRIM…JUST A COUPLE EXAMPLES OF WHAT I WAS CONSIDERING DOING MYSELF. THE FRONT FLOOR PAN SECTIONS HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH ORIGINAL-STYLE PANELS. THE REST OF THE UNDERSIDE IS ORIGINAL AND RUST-FREE—INCLUDING THE TRUCK PAN, INNER QUARTERS, ETC., ETC. DOORS SHUT VERY NICE AND THERE ARE NO ANNOYING SQUEAKS OR RATTLES DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE CHOME ON THE FRONT BUMPER IS IN PRETTY DECENT SHAPE BUT THE REAR IS STARTING TO SHOW ITS AGE. MOST OF THE TRIM IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE, WITH ONLY A FEW SMALL PIECES SHOWING DINGS. ALL GLASS IS IN GREAT SHAPE. THE HOOD-HINDGE SPRINGS SEEM TO BE GETTING A LITTLE WEAK, AND THE REAR OF THE HOOD DOEASN'T FULLY CLOSE UNLESS YOU PUSH DOWN ON THE EDGES. OVERALL, THE BODY IS IN GOOD SHAPE…I HAD PLANNED ON DRIVING IT AND ENJOYING IT JUST LIKE IT IS FOR YEARS TO COME.
INTERIOR:
MUCH OF THE INTERIOR IS NEW, INCLUDING THE DOOR PANELS, SAIL PANELS, HEADLINER, AND REAR SEAT COVERS. THE FACTORY FRONT SEAT COVER IS STATING TO CRACK ALONG THE TOP OUTER EDGES…THIS CAR WOULD BE A GREAT CANDIDATE FOR A BUCKET SEAT SWAP. THE FACTORY DASH PANEL HAS A COUPLE CRACKS, BUT I'M INCLUDING A NEAR-MINT (AND VERY HARD TO FIND) FACTORY-'68 DASH PANEL WITH THE CAR. CARPET IS ALSO NEW-ISH AND IN GOOD SHAPE. THERE IS A STEREO HEAD-UNIT IN THE DASH, BUT IT'S NOT YET HOOKED UP. FUEL GAGE AND SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER BOTH WORK FINE. THE ODOMETER READS 29, 461…ASSUMING IT'S PROBABLY 129, 461. THERE IS A TRIPLE GAUGE POD MOUNTED BEOW THE DASH TO MONITOR ENGINE OIL PRESSURE, TEMP AND AMPS. THE CAR NEEDS A WIPER MOTOR…JUST HAVEN'T GOTTEN AROUND TO REPLACING IT YET. ALSO, THE HEATER CORE IS NOT CONNECTED, BUT THE FACTORY FIREWALL COVER IS INCLUDED IF HEAT IS A PRIORITY (IT WASN'T FOR ME.)
