After World War II, GM was revolutionizing the automotive industry under the direction of Harley Earl. When it came to the Oldsmobile, Harley Earl considered this to be his test bed for factory hot rods and took the 1950 Olds 88 and put in a 4-speed Hydromatic transmission and an overhead V8 engine. When he put this arrangement into the lightweight two-door sedan it was the fastest factory car in 1950.
The 1950 Oldsmobile 2-door sedan (one of the most desirable styles in the series) is being sold by the widow. Her husband decided to do a mild retro rod fit on this car and dropped in a 394 V8 to punch up the original horsepower. With the Hydromatic transmission behind it this car should lay a strip of rubber 50 -100 feet.
The widow has provided us with the information that she had gotten from the files on the car and what she personally knows about the car. As you can see the car has not only been upgraded with the 394 motor but also the interior has been completely redone to a very high level. The engine has been highly detailed and as you can see from the photos and the trunk is extremely tidy. The car has the deluxe steering wheel and beautiful hubcaps and trim rings and a dashboard that just sparkles. Please note that the widow is aware of the fact that there is a problem with the transmission shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. Her husband passed away when he was working on it and she has not found anybody that works on these old cars. So anybody bidding on this car should assume that it will need some transmission work in order to solve the problem. The widow understands that anybody bidding on the car will be discounting for a possible transmission overhaul. Just check out the detailing on the headliner and you can see that this car was done with loving car. The widow believes that the car had a frame off restoration as she recalls as it was told to her by her husband. We believe that the pictures will speak for themselves. Odometer reads 63, 366 but is not documented as original.
If you love the look of the 1950 Oldsmobile and want to have it in its rare 2-door sedan configuration and want a car that will easily run the Quarter Mile in a time that would impress you for this car then you should give this car a second look.
