Detroit businessman Richard Kughn, whose vast collection of Americana spanned the popular culture of the 20th century, owned this 1936 Pierce Arrow 1601 Club Sedan not once, but twice. A 2009 Forbes Magazine profile called Kughn “The King of Classic Cars, ” and with good reason. His collection once numbered 250 cars, all of them meticulously restored and maintained. It is no surprise, then, that this lovely Pierce-Arrow coupe was so close to his heart. Pierce-Arrow emerged from the Great War years riding a wave of growth and with a reputation for building some of the finest luxury automobiles in the world. The Buffalo, New York, plant had grown to encompass 45 acres, and the company was famous worldwide for its meticulous craftsmanship, but its fortunes began to ebb as the competition began to capitalize on technological advances made during wartime. A new six-cylinder engine, the first flathead with four valves per cylinder, failed to impress against competitors’ refined inline-8s, and in 1928 the company was acquired by Studebaker. A series of well-publicized speed record runs and a new V-12 model gave hope for the future, but even the legendary Silver Arrow could not save the company. In 1932 a series of strikes at suppliers resulted in hundreds of lost sales, and in 1933 Studebaker declared bankruptcy and sold Pierce-Arrow to a group of Buffalo businessmen. Independent once again, the company hired former Auburn president Roy Faulkner and launched a restyled line in 1934 and again in 1936, when this 1936 Club Sedan rolled off the assembly line with over 30 significant improvements. Large and stately, its rounded coachwork and built-in trunk were standard features of the Sedan line, which also boasted a 385/150 HP inline-8 engine, a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive and freewheeling, leaf-spring suspension and four-wheel vacuum-assisted mechanical drum brakes. The 1936 Pierce-Arrow’s many improvements gave it superb roadability that even today makes driving one a singularly enjoyable experience. An older restoration, this Club Sedan is adorned with one of the most iconic hood ornaments of all time.
