1935 AUBURN CABRIOLET
6-653 RIGHT-HAND-DRIVE DUAL RATIO SALON RARE BARN FIND
Very rare. A factory built
Right-Hand-Drive Auburn for the automotive market in England. Very
few of these exist that were for the UK, and this was one of only a
very few right hand drive export chassis cars that made it's way back
from Great Britain to the United States.
Solid car with some
surface rust and blemishes. Clear 1935 Auburn convertible title.
Underside of the car shows the wood is in very good condition for the
age, and solid. Last driven in 1973, and parked in dry storage barn. The odometer reads 52952 as mileage. I cannot confirm nor deny that this is accurate.
Needs new interior, a new
top, and some TLC. The framework for the top is all there, but needs
repaired. Original paint, and parts on this car. Owner told me the
horns worked, and they are the Town and Country horns. There is a
round cut out hole on the left fender. The owner told me that someone
may have attempted to mount a longer horn at one time to customize
the Auburn, possibly when it was in Great Britain.
The windshield has the
option of being folded down, which had the nice aspect of the rear
view mirror adjusting for use when that would happen. Great designs
and innovations on this car back in the day! The rumble seat door
looks clean due to it not being closed for many years, but it is the
original that came on the car.
1973 Ohio License Plate
not included.
Factory original dual
ratio overdrive with this 6 cylinder engine. Unfortunately, the owner
didn't manage to get the drain open on the water side plate and
sometime over the last 42 years, the right side block froze and cracked.
Car rolls easily, and was driven into the barn after a good life on
the road. From what I have learned, this may be repairable, or another
six-cylinder can be dropped into place. This car can be back on the
road, again or added to your museum collection.
The Auburn plate on the
firewall indicates it is a Model 653 Six Cylinder, Serial Number 5068
F (Cabriolet), Engine number: WF7350
The Model 653 was a
stylish, durable and reasonably affordable vehicle. It was offered in
three body styles including a Standard, Custom, and a Dual Ratio
Salon. Power was from a six-cylinder engine that was capable of
producing 85 horsepower. This power was sent to the rear wheels
through a three-speed manual gearbox. The elegant and attractive
bodies rested on a wheelbase that measured 120 inches.
These cars are
excellent examples of a brilliant marque that was one of the
prominent builders of cars during the pre-WWII era.
This Auburn 6-653 featured
the new Auburn look for 1935, which was a redesign by Gordon Buehrig, who had earlier designed Duesenberg bodies as well as the Cord
810.
Five different body styles were available in the 6-653
series, including this sporty convertible coupe with rumble seat.
Selling for about $1, 000 in 1935, this represented a lot of car for
the money.
