From the land of Trabant and Wartburg comes Barkas, unusual and interesting truck produced for 30 years, starting in 1961. Often compared to the VW Bus for its utility, Barkas could not be more different mechanically from its famous born-on-the-right-side-of-the-wall cousin. Front-wheel drive, equipped with trailing arms, capable of hauling heavy loads (nearly 5, 000 lbs) and produced as panel or passenger van, pick up truck, flatbed or dropside, the Barkas was a workhorse for the glory of communist state and beyond.
While majority of Barkas were equipped with Wartburg’s 3 cylinder, two-stroke engine, toward the end of production a 1.3L VW powerplant found its way into the engine bay.
The subject of this auction is a 1980 Barkas dropside . While undergoing restoration in Germany few years back, this truck was retrofitted with a 1.6 L VW engine.
I used the Barkas recently to haul some evergreens and potting soil as well as to move a couple of motorcycles. The little truck did the jobs admirably and without a fuss. Provided you are not in a hurry, comfortable cruising speed is around 45-50 mph (top speed, factory-claimed is 62MPH), Barkas will amuse you in the way it drives. The over-the axle sitting position, panoramic view and a shift lever extending 1.5 feet from the back of the cabin with the shift knob located just to the back of your right-hand elbow, surprisingly compliant ride (not at all like a traditional pickup’s, thanks to the suspension design) and quiet interior make for a fun ride. Robust design, practical utility and simple maintenance make Barkas an easy collectible truck to own.
New high-load tires installed. Recently replaced cap & rotor, spark plugs and wires.
