The FASTEST car in the WORLD. ..IN REVERSE!!!!
In perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition. This ‘62 DAF Daffodil, thanks to its diminutive size would make a great classic car for cruising in densely populated resort areas. It stands out in a crowd. Imagine parking something much less common than a Brabus Smart, or Fiat 500 in a parking spot reserved for space saving automobiles. This 1962 DAF Daffodil presently offered by Newport Classic Cars (the 3rd owner), created quite a stir when it emerged onto the collector scene, and was proclaimed by Micro-car aficionados Internet wide to be the very finest example known to exist. DAF is a Dutch manufacturer founded in 1928 that established its reputation building commercial duty large trucks. Interestingly the ancestral roots of the DAF Daffodil are traceable in the 21st Century to PACCAR, manufacturer of Peterbilt, Kenworth, Leyland, and DAF trucks. According to DAF club statistics there are a total of 125-140 DAF automobiles left in the United States, with only 25-30 being DAF Daffodils. Revolutionary automatic transmissionA unique main feature of the 1962 DAF Daffodil is its revolutionary CVT (constant variable transmission) combined with IRS (independent rear suspension) and a form of positraction that delivers power to both rear wheels. The British were the first to attempt a constant variable transmission in 1923, but DAF refined it to the point it provided the blueprint for 21st Century CVT transmissions to follow. The analogy is Gatling gun technology that evolved into the M61 Vulcan. After pioneering an infinite ratio automatic transmission in 1955 the company spent four more years in research and development before debuting the prototype DAF 600 passenger car February 7, 1958 at the Amsterdam Auto Show. Four-thousand DAF 600s were pre-ordered and the tiny 4-seater went on the market in 1959. 750 cubic-centimeter engineIntroduced in 1961 the DAF Daffodil with its larger more efficient 750 cubic-centimeter engine was assembled at the Eindhoven, plant in the province of North Brabant, Netherlands. The Daffodil is the highest trim level available in a model that starts with the base level DAF 750. All models came standard with the company’s groundbreaking transmission design. With the same passionate devotion DAF developed its first automobile it debuted the very first of its kind, the DAF Variomatic fully-automatic infinite-ratio transmission (CVT). A unique design feature now shared with the modern day Bugatti Veyron the Variomatic system employs two transmissions. One transmission per rear wheel. Should one transmission fail, the other transmission is sufficient to keep the car in motion. The DAF is finished in original equipment BASF Glasurit a brand of paint famous for its amazing resilience, and gloss.
Original owner recounts
A statement from The DAF’s original owner Jeremy Van Bemmelen. I am located in New York and I have a one owner 1962 DAF Daffodil. The car was registered until 1966-67 only to be used to get around the grounds of a large Brookville estate here on Long Island. The car had a full restoration to Pebble Beach, or Greenwich Concours d’ Elegance standards in 1995. I want to possibly sell the car because just sits in a collection and serves no purpose for me other than looking cute and making conversation. It is complete with all tools and factory workshop manuals bound in metal.
