1954 HUDSON HORNET

HISTORY
The Hudson Motor Car
Company was known for producing durable, well engineered but conservatively
styled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed on December 7th, 1947 when Hudson
introduced their new 1948 models in nationwide showings. Banners proclaimed “This Time It’s Hudson”.
The cars won instant acclaim from the public. The new car was revolutionary in
that virtually no parts interchanged with the 1947 models, except the eight
cylinder engine, which was essentially the same. The car had the lowest center
of gravity and the lowest roofline of any American car without sacrificing
headroom, due to the floorpans being attached to the bottom of the frame
members instead of the top as all previous American cars had been. While the
1941 Nash 600 had been the first production unibody car, the new Hudson was
significantly more rugged in construction and offered a sleek new design that
was way ahead of the competition. The new body design was termed “Monobilt”
because the body structure was of welded all steel construction.
The Legendary Hudson
Hornet was introduced for the 1951 model year. They immediately started burning
up the racetracks and byways of America.
Many improvements were made for the 1952 model as the racing experience
pinpointed any weak spots. The engineering advancements progressed as 1953 and
1954 model years went by. For the 1954 model year the Horsepower ratings
increased to 160 for the single carb engine and 170 for the Twin H powered
units.
The 1954 Hornet Sedan
featured in this auction lived its life as a car in Sunny Southern California. There
is a California registration card and lube sticker included. It was garage
stored from 1972 until a couple of weeks ago. The current mileage is 98, 328. I
believe this to be the actual mileage. This car is the desirable 1954 Hornet
equipped with Twin H Power, Four Speed Dual Range Hydramatic and a Dana 44 3.07
ratio rear axle. It is equipped with an Oil Filter, Radio, heater, directional signals and two tone paint. The car also has a trailer hitch. The
story is that it brought a family and all of their possessions towing a U Haul
trailer from Southern California to Decatur Indiana in 1972! It has been in
storage ever since. It still wears the 1972 Indiana license plate and state
inspection sticker!
CONDITION
This car is running
and lot drives. The engine is strong and the Hydramatic shifts fine. I believe
the matching numbers engine was rebuilt before the journey to Indiana. There
are newly installed ignition parts and a battery from NAPA. The radiator is
reconditioned, a new thermostat, water pump and fan belt have been installed. There
is a fresh fuel pump. The Carburetors need to be rebuilt, fresh kits from
Daytona Parts are included. I have been running it from a 1 gallon auxiliary
fuel tank. It will stop from a low speed as the reserve braking system is still
operable. It is a Southern California car and is virtually Rustfree! It is all
original paint except the passenger front fender was refinished at some point. The
interior chrome and steering wheel are Nice. The interior seat cloth is rough.
The cloth headliner is missing. The headliner bows are included. New replacement carpets, windlace and
headliner are also included. The windshield is cracked, a good used windshield
is included. It is very complete including the bumper jack, spare and original
trunk mat. Some of the exterior chrome
is nice, others just OK. There is a scrape down the passenger side depicted in the photos. Replacement
stainless trim is included for most damaged pieces.
There is an Indiana title in my name. I am starting
the bidding at about what it is worth in cores and scrap metal! I think this car is a
worthy candidate for a full restoration, or do the mechanicals and enjoy the
Great Patina!
