1954 HUDSON HORNET SPECIAL SEDAN
HISTORY
The Hudson Motor Car Company was known for producing durable, well engineered but conservatively styled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed on December 7th, 1947 when Hudson introduced their new 1948 models in nationwide showings. Banners proclaimed “This Time It’s Hudson”. The cars won instant acclaim from the public. Production had actually begun on October 12th. The tremendous factory conversion effort took only 23 days. Hudson spent $16, 000, 000 for development and new production equipment. The new car was revolutionary in that virtually no parts interchanged with the 1947 models, except the eight cylinder engine, which was essentially the same. The car had the lowest center of gravity and the lowest roofline of any American car without sacrificing headroom, due to the floor pans being attached to the bottom of the frame members instead of the top as all previous American cars had been. While the 1941 Nash 600 had been the first production unibody car, the new Hudson was significantly more rugged in construction and offered a sleek new design that was way ahead of the competition. The new body design was termed “Monobilt” because the body structure was of welded all steel construction.
The Legendary Hudson Hornet was introduced for the 1951 model year. Hornets immediately started burning up the racetracks and byways of America. The last year of Detroit Hudson production was 1954. By 1954 the single carburetor Hornets were rated at 160 Horsepower due to better valve relief and a more aggressive camshaft. The Twin H Power models were rated at 170. The 1954 Hudson Hornet Special was introduced on March 19, 1954. It featured a price that was $115 to $140 cheaper than the standard Hornet depending on body style.
The 1954 Hornet Special Sedan featured in this auction was purchased by a longtime Hudson Club acquaintance from a Used Car Lot in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1961 with about 40k miles for $350! He kept it and used it as an everyday car for many years. He kept meticulous records on the car. It spent time with him in the Bahamas when he served in the Military there. He sold it to a co-worker when the mileage turned 100k. The car has been scarcely, but regularly used since as the current mileage is 104, 722. It has always been in the hands of people who garaged and cared for it. Originally it was Coronation Cream over Lipstick red, with a Green interior. It is equipped with the Hotter “Flattop” camshaft that has a distinctive solid lifter sound unique to 54 Hornets. This car also features standard shift with Overdrive, a 4.55 Dana rear axle, Radio and Heater, Guide Day/ Night mirror, Ventshades, directional signals and full wheel covers with Whitewalls.
CONDITION
The 1954 Hudson Hornet Special offered here is a quiet, matching number, great running Hornet with Overdrive. It really runs Strong! It sports a Magnificent Original interior. The carpets were replaced at some point. The interior painted panels and chrome are Excellent! The car was repainted Turquoise and later the current two tone Metallic green. The body and paint work is driver grade, although shines nicely. Some of the exterior chrome and trim is quite nice, others just OK. There are new reproduction front parking lenses and medallion. The floorpans and spring perches are rust free. There is some rust in the outer perimeter frame, but is in similar condition to another Hudson Hornet that I have been driving for over 40 years! The car was in need of some mechanical maintenance when I acquired it. The engine and transmission were pulled, the clutch inspected and the release bearing replaced. The front seal and timing chain were replaced. The oilpump drive gear was replaced. Fresh head and pan gaskets were installed and the engine cleaned, painted and reinstalled with fresh mounts and some coolant hoses. There was also a valve adjustment and new ignition parts installed. All of the lights and gauges function correctly. The clock and radio are inop. The Overdrive functions correctly including the Kickdown feature. There are new Wide Whitewall bias ply collector car tires on powder coated wheels. The spare tire, bumper jack and tools are present. It is currently titled in my name, licensed, insured and on the road. I have been driving this car as an everyday car the last few weeks. It runs, shifts, drives, handles and stops perfectly!
