1949 HUDSON COMMODORE EIGHT CONVERTIBLE BROUGHAM
HISTORY
The Hudson Motor Car
Company was known for producing durable, well engineered but conservatively
styled automobiles. That reputation was to be forever changed on December 7th, 1947 when Hudson
introduced their new 1948 models in nationwide showings. Banners proclaimed “This Time It’s Hudson”.
The cars won instant acclaim from the public. Production had actually begun on
October 12th. The tremendous factory conversion effort took only 23
days. Hudson
spent $16, 000, 000 for development and new production equipment. The new car was
revolutionary in that virtually no parts interchanged with the 1947 models, except the eight cylinder engine, which was essentially the same. The car had
the lowest center of gravity and the lowest roofline of any American car
without sacrificing headroom, due to the floorpans being attached to the bottom
of the frame members instead of the top as all previous American cars had been.
While the 1941 Nash 600 had been the first production unibody car, the new Hudson
was significantly more rugged in construction and offered a sleek new design
that was way ahead of the competition. The new body design was termed
“Monobilt” because the body structure was of welded all steel construction. The
cars were available in Super and Commodore trim levels with either a Six or
Eight cylinder engine. Convertible production did not commence until late in
the 1948 model year.
The 1949 Commodore
Eight Convertible Brougham featured in this auction was purchased and restored
by one of the foremost Hudson parts vendors. I am listing this car for his
widow. The restoration was completed in 1980. The current mileage is 72182. It
has a replacement Non matching number 254 Hudson Eight engine from another 1949
Commodore. This car is loaded with every conceivable option. This includes
standard shift with Overdrive, a 4 1/9 rear axle, Radio and Heater, Power
Windows and Top, Power Gascap, Gas door guard, Dual Spotlights, Fog lights, Reverse lights, Directional signals, windshield visor and traffic light finder, Breezies, Deluxe bumper guards, front and rear, Chrome wire wheels with wide
whitewall bias ply Collector car tires, remote spare tire filler, windshield
washers, Chrome Exhaust deflector and a Hudson script Kleenex dispenser.
CONDITION
This car is a very nicely preserved restored car that will
drive to any destination. You could start driving this car everyday. It runs
and drives nicely and has a cruising speed of 60-65 MPH. The paint, chrome and
interior were restored in 1980, but have held up beautifully! It won an AACA National First Prize in a show in 1984! Many
NOS parts were utilized in the restoration. The steering wheel and Chrome are
in near new condition! The interior was restored in Leatherette instead of real
Topgrain Leather as it was originally. The paint and body have held up well, although a paint touchup and detailing would buy this car a lot! A matching
wire wheel, spare tire and jack still reside in the trunk. All of the lights
and Gauges work. The Clock and Radio work nicely. I checked everything and
could find nothing that does not operate. Some spares in the trunk are included. I have
driven this car and it has a whisper Quiet, matching number, Good Running
Hudson Eight. It really runs Strong! It is currently Licensed, Insured and on
the road.
