After extensive upgrades, this 1962 Kellison J6 Panther is back on the market. VIN: 20867S114231 – California Title – Titled as a 1962 KELL Its dramatic, low-slung looks will stop traffic as well today as it did at the L.A. Auto Show in 1958 where Griff Borgeson observed in Sports Cars Illustrated, “In any 10 minutes around the Kellison exhibit, you could collect adjectives to last a lifetime. They were emotionally-charged ones such as brutal, beautiful, sexy, voluptuous… it acts like a magnet on the eyeballs of the masses. Moving, it disrupts traffic; parked it draws marveling crowds that are stunned by its appearance, [and] its incredible lowness...” Jim Kellison, an aeronautical engineer designed and built low slung fiberglass cars in the 1950's and 1960's. Some were successfully road raced and run at Bonneville, as well as being street driven. Plans show how the bodies were mounted on Corvette chassis. The motor was relocated rear ward 12 for improved weight distribution. Kellison died in September of 2004. This car was built on a 1962 Corvette chassis, with a small block V8 and a 4-speed manual transmission. Strikingly handsome, it is considered by many the most beautiful of the sports racing special of the period. This particular Kellison J6 is a rare survivor. During the last 18 months, while the original external look of the car hasn’t been tempered with (with the exception of front turning lights), we aimed at making this car more safe, reliable, pleasurable to drive, and street-friendly. To accomplish this, we installed a brand new Chevrolet 350-V8 crate engine producing 333 hp @ 5100 rpm. (See link below). We paired that engine with a Tremec TKO-500 5-speed transmission. We added a new Ididit Tilt Aluminum Brushed Steering Column, a new steering wheel, a new Clutch/Brake pedal assembly, and complete Stewart Warner instrumentation set. Of course, a new complete wiring harness was used in the process. Literally hundreds of hours have been spent on the car, most of them ingeniously figuring out how to adapt this modern technology to a 1962 chassis/body. For safety issues, all windows have been replaced with laminated glass or Plexiglas (back window). We added a parking brake, turning lights, a horn, and windshield wipers. Finally, the 2 doors have been equipped with power windows. (Needs finishing touches) The cars sports its original American Racing Thrust wheels with the Kellison emblem on the wheel center cap. Our knowledge about the history of the car is limited. I bought this car in Nov. 2014 in the San Francisco bay area. We found out that it was sold by RM/Sotheby’s in 2006 in Arizona, and the following year, by RM/Sotheby’s again, in Monterey, Ca. We would greatly appreciate any additional information on the car somebody may have. To potential buyers: driving a Kellison could be “challenging” for 6-foot and up drivers.
