This is a titled, running and mostly restored 1910 Franklin
Model G touring car with a totally unique 4 cylinder air-cooled engine #12165
HC, using concentric valves in the head & a 3rd exhaust valve at
the bottom of the cylinder to increase HP. I have included a picture of the
same un-restored car from 1953 driven in a parade. Note these cars were all right hand drive with a 3-speed
transmission. Mechanically the cars are the same from 1908 thru 1911. There is
a very active & supportive Franklin Club if help is needed.
This car has the 1911 Renault hood instead of the 1910
Barrel hood. I have included a copy of “The Horseless Age” from December 1909
giving specs & dimensions. There is lots of brass to really shine. The
engine is lubricated with a gear driven metered oil pump and fired by a Bosch
magneto. The original tires were solid
rubber, so they were replaced with wheels & rims from a Star. The car comes
with original manual reproductions of “Franklin 1910 Motor Car Instructions”, “Hints and Instructions on Adjusting and Repairing Franklin Motor Cars”, a
total Franklin parts breakdown and the Bosch instructions, which is about all
the information there is available. The horn was stolen many years ago. It was
replaced with a brass Rubes reproduction, it still needs the squeeze bulb and
connections. The headlights are brass-plated steel fueled by acetylene; two
antique bottles are included for left fender. As can be seen in the motor
pictures, some blacksmith did a masterful patch job on the side of the aluminum
block with a steel patch; I looked inside the block and could not see any
damage.
This car has been in my family since the 1930’s and has been
a long-term restoration project. Most of the costly and difficult work is
completed, such that the new owner can benefit from the many hours of expensive
and challenging restoration that I will mention. The major work remaining is a
top (old bow parts incl.) and paint!
Here are a few of the restoration items completed. The
entire oak frame and body wood have been replaced with new hard wood. The
fenders have been repaired, smoothed and primered. The body is made of
aluminum, with forged steel reinforcements, which have been cleaned and
primered. The seats are diamond-tufted leather professionally done in 1985 at a
cost of $2000. The tires were new in 1985 and remain in new condition. The worn
axle, bearing housing & coupling were flame sprayed and machined. The worn
king pins were built up & machined with standard threads and new bushings
were installed to tighten the steering. Two brass cracked axle brackets &
one steering bracket were recast and machined. All of the rusted out &
cracked sheet metal on the motor shroud and running board splash aprons have
been duplicated with new metal & replaced. All of the brakes have new
linings installed. The running boards are new. The worn intake valve grooves
were corrected with new valve retainer plates machined to fit the valves
allowing correct & accurate valve adjustment. The valves were cleaned &
ground. The magneto was timed correctly after the valves were fixed allowing
for easy starting & smooth running.
I am posting many pictures of everything that comes
with the car. I made a short video showing the car running and driving. Contact me for the link.If you have questions send me an email or call me (Chuck) at 308-430-0759. Thanks for looking!
