I purchased this a while back from a young man who inherited it from his grandfather. He claimed that it was built in the 70s, but did not include any documentation to prove it. I couldn't find any evidence to not believe him though. The drivetrain had been replaced with a Volvo engine and transmission. The brakes and rear end also appear to be Volvo pieces. Im guessing that a 122s donated all the parts for the project. The car had been parked for a few years, but after replacing the oil and installing a new battery, it started right up. We topped off the the brake and clutch fluid and were able to let the grandson take one last drive before buying it. We addressed some of the most important problems like the brake lights, but the direction of this project will be up to the next owner. Body
This car features an aluminum over ash body and is in decent condition. There are dings here and there and the paint has some scratches. There are a few pieces of wood that feel loose (like the lowest one in the tail), but we didn't find any rot. With some wood glue and a few screws those areas could be repaired easily. These don't affect driving though. The bumpers and top are long gone, but the original side screens are included. I will also include all the miscellaneous parts that came with the car including the wiper motor, etc. The wiring harness also came from a Volvo.
Chassis/Suspension
100% solid frame with no rust. The front bushings could probably use some attention soon, but the steering and suspension feels tight as-is. The tires are good, but are older so some would recommend replacing them, but that is up to you. The Volvo rims are in great condition.
Interior
Custom dash features many gauges that all work with exception of the water temp gauge. No speedometer. The seats are fiberglass buckets. There is plenty of legroom though as these were much roomier than their MG competitors.
Engine
The previous owner removed the original 1500 and installed a Volvo B18. This isnt just any old engine though as it has headers, dual Weber 45s, and an ipd valve cover. The swap was well-done and the engine runs great and provides quite a thrill in such a lightweight car! It does drip some oil, but we have driven it at high speeds for extended distances and never overheated or had any other issues.
Transmission
Volvo 4-speed transmission with Bell shift knob. Shifts great, but I did notice that the clutch master cylinder is a little wet on the backside. Not a big deal to replace though because it is a Volvo unit.
Brakes
Again, Volvo components. Im not sure about the front drums, but the back are Volvo as is the master cylinder. The brakes work great as does the fly-off handbrake. They work better than the stock setup would have and that's good considering how much more power is available. I notice some leakage on the back of the master cylinder down by the pedal, so Im including a brand new master cylinder in the sale. We just went through all the lights, so the brake lights, markers, and headlights work as they should. This car was built before turn signals were mandatory so you will have to use hand signals or install an aftermarket blinker system.
