These Zenns are getting hard to find, especially since they were among the last ones produced, were made from a REAL car, and they came with the Zenn upgraded AC electric motors. Everything works as it should,
How many trips do you make from your home that don't require you to travel more than about 20-25 miles? I use it for trips to the bank, post office, grocery, restaurants, work, and my insurance is about $125/year! This is a 72 volt NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, or LSV -Low Speed Vehicle).
Please don't confuse this vehicle for one of the golf carts that are converted for street use like the GEM, Ford Think, MotoEV etc.
These other NEV brands start at about $8, 000 and go up in price quickly (approx $15, 000 or more loaded) when you begin to add options like real wheels and tires, stereo, doors, roof and windows, things that protect you from the weather. Most still provide almost no room for cargo unless you want to hang a golf bag off the rear.
The Zenn has a highway style tire that's 13 inches on a nice Alloy rim, not little golf cart or motor scooter type 9-12 inch tires. This car is not for the Interstate, however it will get you anywhere around town you need to go LEGALLY on streets where the streets speed limit is 35-40 mph or lower. Check your own local areas for possible speed restrictions. The other neighborhood electric vehicles, which are almost always based on the golf carts usually go somewhere between 20-25 mph.The maximum distance you can travel is up to 80 miles with a New set of Lithium ion batteries. With normal lead acid style batteries the range is approximately 20 to 25 miles. Your range may vary depending on terrain, temperature and how much accelerator pedal you use. Since most of the neighborhood electric vehicles are basically golf carts the tendency is to press the accelerator pedal down to the floor to take off. If you do that in this car you will burn rubber. The battery pack that is in this car currently is an aging AGM lead acid style. There are 6-12 V batteries. The existing batteries are getting weaker, but I am still getting around 10 - 12 miles range, depending on how fast I drive, and I do like to drive between 35 and 40 mph. Just like a gasoline car, the faster you go the more fuel it uses. To get a proper range of 20 - 25 miles, (with conventional lead acid batteries), this car will need a new set of batteries soon.
Zenn motorcars were produced in Canada from a highway production vehicle originally designed to do approximately 70 miles an hour with a diesel motor by the French car company MicroCar. Zenn bought about 500 of these Microcars without engine or transmission and equipped them with electric motors. What differentiates these from the typical LSV or NEV is that these were NOT build from a golf cart chassis and parts are mostly not proprietary and are available, if necessary. I have had no problems with this car and it has required no parts other than a windshield wiper blade which I was able to get from my local auto parts store and a controller reprogram from a highly acclaimed California EV speed shop.
There are no dents, cracks, no damage, no rust and no significant scratches on the body. The interior is just like new. See photos. This car has approximately 3860 miles on the odometer. There is now a picture of the dash display, by request. Please note that the display is the same as was originally used in the French diesel version except the 'fuel gauge refers to 'state of electrical charge'. The wrench icon to the right of the speedometer is indicating 'time for an oil change', this is just a carry over from the petrol using days and automatically comes on at 3, 000 miles on ALL Zenns. Of course, there is no oil to change. I never bothered to find out how to turn the wrench icon off. Also, as I'm sure you know, no transmission fluid, no water, no radiator, no tune-ups etc. The brakes and tires are like brand new!
This 2009 Zenn is a really smart car. The body color is a fine silver metal flake silverwith matching trim and features keyless entry, air-conditioning, stereo, power windows, four wheel regenerative disc brakes, alloy rims, automatic transmission and features a special Custom Programmed Curtis 72 V controller, allowing it a top speed of approximately 40 mph. it will politely pin you back in your seat when you come off the line, if you wish. Of course, if you drive like a race driver you will reduce your range considerably. But it is fun, on the occasional take off from the stoplight, to leave the crowd in the dust. This is a fun car to drive and will plug into any 110V wall outlet and get a full charge in less than 8 hours, with lead acid batteries. You can recharge to 80% full in about four hours. It takes only about two hours to fully charge a Lithium Ion battery pack. This one is plugged in anytime it is home and I have noticed no significant increase in my home electric bill. It is fully charged every morning. I also plug this in occasionally at work (about 3 miles away). This is precisely why I must sell this truly 'smart car', because my job is soon to be taking me out of town. Speaking of Smart cars, this is slightly larger than a Smart Car and it is similar in size to the basic Mini Cooper. One of the photos shows it parked behind a Fiat 500, (very similar in size).
Zenns have a built-in DeltaQ 72V 'smart charger' and only requires an extension cord to plug it in to any grounded household outlet. I totally love this little car and will dearly miss it. This 2009 Zenn has been trouble-free but I'm going to require a more conventional vehicle for the highway. This is perfect as a second car to get you around town. I am the second owner and it has been driven all over New Orleans, which is where the car must be picked up from (70124).
