Pininfarina designed this very special 1967 Peugot 404 Cabriolet. Like all Pininfarina designed automobiles this 404 Cabriolet can be described as a rolling work of art and, in classic Pininfarina traditon, it is red with black rag top and interior. The Peugeot 404 cabriolet/convertible made its first appearance at the Paris Motor Show in October 1961. The convertible bodyshell was made by the Pininfarina workshops in Turin. The $3, 899 price in 1965 put the convertible in the same price bracket as the Jaguar E-Type in the American market.
I have had the great pleasure of owning this rare automobile since 1986 when the original owner sold it to a dealer and a I saw it that same day. It spent most of its life in Beverly Hills, Ca where every time I drove it I was stopped constantly with a wow what a beautiful car what is it . With 4 on the column exciting easy shifting makes the 404 cabriolet a pleasure to drive. Simply a fun auto. Top up or top down
In CA I had the car repainted. Unfortunately the shop owner had a terrible personal tragedy and, as a consequence, lost the following items: 2 Windshield Wiper Bezel Nuts, 1 Spare Wheel & Tool Kit, 1 Top Radiator Bracket, 1 Front Hose Badge, 1 Front Fender Side Lamp (broken), 1 Gas Cap, 1 Deck Lid Lock, 1 Outside DoorLock, 2 Inside Door Handles and Bezels, 1 Lower Glide Driver's Side, 2 Pininfarina Insignia Body Placques, , Peugeot 404 Front Hood Insignia, RagTop Bootcover, 3 Pedal Pads. In 2007 $5600 of mechanical work was done and I used the car for weekend rides till shipping it to FL in mid 2011 and the car has not been used much since and is presently not running. The body condition is good just some small chips (see photos), The metal spine of the soft top has some surface rust and the inside of the fabric is not great, the interior is good upholstery & dash, the steering wheel had a crack prior to my ownership, the turn signal and forward/back sea levers plastic tips need replacing.
There are not many 1967 or for that matter any of the 1960s Pinanfarina Peugeot 404 Cabriolet Convertibles and very very few in the US. It is a rarity for them to offered in the marketplace. From my research the last one on ebay was in December 2013, it had over 200, 000 miles, and like mine needed some restoration, sold for $20, 000. In Europe I understand that a restored 1967 404 Cabriolet currently sells for around $30, 000 to $35, 000.
