I purchased this 505 sight-unseen in January 2015 from a public auction in Philadelphia. The original owner purchased it from the dealership in Ramsey, New Jersey, and kept it on the road until donating it to charity late last year. The car likely sat for a little while before being donated, but the New Jersey inspection sticker from 2013 shows that it was not off the road for long. I was given the original title issued in November 1984, so I am only the second registered owner. In the past five months I have turned this 505 into a reliable regular driver that I would not hesitate to take across the country. Last month I drove it from DC to Carlisle, Pennsylvania for the Import/Kit/Replicar show (one of the larger east coast gatherings of Citroens, Peugeots, and Renaults). From there I drove to Scranton, Pennsylvania and back home, covering more than 500 miles in total without a hitch. One tank of gas carried me over 400 miles, averaging 26.5mpg while driving through the mountains at 75-80mph most of the way.
I have a feeling I will experience instant seller's regret letting this car go, but I recently brought home a 1989 505 STX V6, and I only have room for one project at a time.
Work over the past few months includes:Replaced

The XN6 motor is renowned for its longevity, so even at 136k it has plenty of life remaining. I have not had to add any oil over 1500+ miles, and the oil on the dipstick has not even darkened significantly. The gearbox is quiet and smooth through every gear, and since replacing the vertical shift linkage rod there is little slop in the lever. I will include a new old stock long horizontal shifter rod with the car, but the existing one was verified to be in decent shape. Unlike the vertical rod, the horizontal one can be replaced from under the car rather than tearing apart the entire center console. I could hardly engage first gear when I first acquired the car, but now shifting is crisp and confident. There are two sets of keys (ignition and trunk).
The matching set of Pirelli P400 Touring tires have ample tread remaining. They look virtually new. The steering tracks perfectly straight.
The four-wheel disc brakes are smooth as butter, and the parking brake holds strongly even on an incline.
I am inclined to believe that the car was sheltered most of its life, since 30 years of salty roads in metropolitan New York City would have been terminal for any French car, and the sun would have fried the interior and yellowed the plastic North American headlights far beyond their current state. There are only two or three small cracks in the dashboard, which is as good as I have seen on a 505 of this age. The material is still pliable, and all of the dashboard and console pieces are intact and unbroken. The steering wheel is nearly perfect with no cracking or bubbling from exposure to the sun. The plush seats are incredibly comfortable, rivaling even Peugeot 604 and Citroen DS seats. Since this is an S model, even the angle of the seat bottom is adjustable. Heated seats were included, but I do not believe the driver seat heater is working. All four windows go up and down without issue. The sunroof opens and closes, but it needs a little help in the last half of its travel. If you know 505s, it is remarkable enough that it works at all. There is an aftermarket JVC stereo cassette player in the console, but it is not hooked up. The central locking system worked when I first got the car, but quit about a month ago. For some reason the lower console switches stay lit whether or not the headlights are on, but they turn off with the ignition, so I'm not sure whether this is a feature or an easy-to-ignore problem.
There are several dings and a few spots of rust, but they are merely cosmetic. The Commonwealth of Virginia is a stickler about structural rust issues during the annual safety inspection, so if there were major concerns it would not have passed. The left front fender is in the worst shape, with rust through the top edge and around the side marker, as well as a spot of surface rust near the A-pillar. Small areas have rusted through at the driver side rear wheel arch, but the passenger side is in better shape. There is a small dent in the leading edge of the hood right above the grille emblem. The door bottoms are all solid.
I will include the following parts with the car:Spare radiatorStraight, usable left front fender with only minor rust in a spot that is hidden behind the front valanceOriginal radiator fan, shroud, and clutch brushOriginal North American headlights in case you are either 1) a purist, or 2) certifiably insane with regard to your aesthetic preferencesSpare throttle bodyNumerous bulbs and lighting socketsA small box of miscellaneous bits and pieces from an '83 XN6 I parted out last yearTest drives or phone calls are welcome and encouraged. My name is Karl and I can be reached at 703-231-9888 if you would like to discuss anything. I work from home, so I am generally available to show the car during weekdays or weekends.
PICKUP OR SHIPPING
I am located in Arlington, Virginia, close to two major airports: Dulles (IAD) or Reagan International (DCA). I'll pick you up at either if you want to drive the car home. I am happy to accommodate shipping at the buyer's arrangement and expense. I am planning to visit the Detroit area over the July 4 holiday, so if you are near the DC-Pittsburgh-Cleveland-Detroit corridor, I would be willing to discuss delivery for little more than gas money. I'd really like this car to be enjoyed wherever it goes.
