I"ll bet you haven"t got one of these! This is a 1942 Kentucky passenger license plate, but instead of the requisite county name at bottom, FORT KNOX appears in its place.I was told that these rare, full-sized license plates were a totally different species from the familiar numbered Fort Knox license toppers, and small numbered license tags enabling motorists to enter the base. Instead, the plate we are offering here belonged to a permanent resident of Fort Knox.Please note: Fort Knox is not a county - it is, (and was in 1942), a US Army post. Its massive sprawl of 170 square miles covers parts of Bullitt, Hardin, and Meade counties. This plate is extraordinary, as it is not an add-on. It enabled the motorists displaying them to enter Fort Knox at will, and yet was valid on all other Kentucky public roads as an ordinary passenger license plate.This item is so rare, that the vast ALPCA online archives have no mention of it. I even searched the internet for information about it, and came up short. I only know of two or three other of these rare plates in my many decades of collecting, (although there may be more out there).Interestingly, the ALPCA online Archives do indicate that some 1942 Kentucky passenger plates begin its serial number with a leading 0 (zero) - however, that leading zero is always followed by a letter. Not so on this strange plate, which leads with a zero followed by a numeral - which we know is a one, and not the letter I because letters displayed on Kentucky plates of this era were smaller in size. Of the few of these bizarre Fort Knox passenger plates I have seen, the one you are looking at right now is in the nicest condition. I grade it Good to Almost Good Plus. It has all original paint, only very minor scrapes, and the only surface rust appears to be along parts of the extreme top edge.
