You are looking at the FIRST ISSUE of Delaware"s PC license plates - these were issued to station wagons which were passenger cars, (and not commercial vehicles).This variety was first issued in 1951. This plate measures 11 inches long by 5.5 inches high. It features reflectorized numbers riveted to a stainless steel base, with the stacked PC prefix on the left.Due to some scratches, bangs and two extra holes along the top edge, this plate is only graded in Good condition, however, a great deal of the original, fragile black background paint remains, which is so often not the case with these 1950s stainless issues.This tag comes with a nice vintage American Legion license plate topper, which is in Very Good original condition. It has a beautiful copper/bronze colored patina, and lettering surrounded by what looks like some sort of cobalt blue porcelain enamel, or cloisonné. This topper measures 4.5 inches at its highest points, and 3 inches at its widest.On the bottom left of the plate is a green June 30 date tab. These metal month tabs were discontinued around 1962, but it is common to find them remaining on old Delaware license plates well into the era of annual date stickers. Selling by themselves, these scarce metal tabs often bring nice money in auctions.
