“scuffing at mounting holes”

This is a 1970s series California motorcycle license plate 6F6724. It is made of steel, measures 4 x 7 inches and is painted yellow on blue. It"s in excellent condition.
The unique feature of this plate is the small 1 x 1 sticker well for the month sticker.
Prior to 1976 the policy of the DMV was to renew all vehicle registrations by the end of January. This was a daunting task owing to the number of vehicles (11,226,000) that had to be registered in 30 days.
In 1970 the DMV enacted a plan for registrations that were staggered by month. Motorcycle registration was chosen as a prototype where both month and year stickers were used for the first time. The license plate was redesigned to include two sticker wells, one MONTH and the other YEAR. The year sticker was the same 1 x 2 but the month sticker was 1 x 1. The motorcycle plate was again redesigned in 1977 to accommodate two stickers measuring 1 x 2
This listing is for a license plate plus a SEP month sticker and a 1974 year sticker. I have a MAY sticker that I can substitute.
