Right now I’m offering our extensive collection of Auto License Plates, starting with the earliest – except for ‘do-it-yourself’ plates made of leather, wire grids, and wood to display the state-directed numbers. Those hand-mades in the museum Bicentennial display were extremely valuable, and we were honored that many owners loaned them for display. Needless to say, we returned those!
DETAILS AND CONDITION:
Here is the rare, one-year only wartime 1942-1943 NJ License Set! Number W/C64X In TRULY AMAZING CONDITION for an historical number of reasons beside its age, now nearly three-quarters of a Century! We have BOTH of these (same number), both front & rear plates. IF YOU WISH BOTH advise us IMMEDIATELY - price will be double the amount for one!
VERY GOOD CONDITION with some rubbing around the top bolt-slots (not rust or broken paint). The face has the ubiquitous Princeton colors, Orange on Black; the back just the same black enamel. Because of the shortage of steel in the middle of World War 2, instead of that period’s 14-ounces of steel each - times two for the required front-and-rear plates) - for umpteen thousands of New Jersey vehicles, the Garden State simply issued little steel tags which were required to be fastened to the lower-right bolt slot, with their year 43 painted a contrasting light tan or ecru. That made it easy for police and Motor Vehicle folk to tell the difference. I say - Darn clever, these Jerseyans, what?
By such positioning, the number 43 covered the previous year 42. We have both of this number plates, the second being in slightly less condition, which we will offer separately unless the winning bidder wants both, which will double the cost. If you have a 1942 or 1943 automobile and register it in New Jersey, they might let you use these plates.
Both 43 tabs are fastened with common half-inch Quarter-Twenty wide-top bolts with the standard square nuts of that era. Each carries a stamped in Official Serial Number 596258, which to me says that by then there were at least that many registered New Jersey motor vehicles – at a time that such were rarely seen without a full complement of passengers - what with fuel-saving, car-sharing, rationing of gasoline (and practically everything else). BTW did you know why gasoline was rationed? Not because of a shortage here of petroleum – because of the lack of rubber! Go tell that to your favorite teen-age hot-rodder!
I remember these plates but do not recall if NJ supplied the nut-and-bolt fasteners. I was seven, and our family had just moved back into New Jersey from some years in Connecticut. I was well aware of the Second World War via the constant newspaper and radio coverage.
This is why I got hooked on radio, and decided by Age 8 that I would become a Radio Announcer. One reason was that the names of most performers on radio - unless they were stars - remained unknown to their listeners. But announcers ended their spiel with the likes of “And me – I’m Harlow Wilcox”; “With Don Wilson”; “This is Graham McNamee”; or “I am Tony Marvin”. Oh - and years later “Ron Pierce” (alias one Lee Munsick).
Some states including NJ allow auto owners to have original-year numbers registered on the owner’s personal automobile IF it is of the correct year of the vehicle, and will fit in the DMV computer system. Plus, there is the other difficulty - that New Jersey – unlike our retirement home of Florida – requires both front and rear license plates. Darn!
I have been an ardent collector most of my lifetime, in many fields: Recorded Sound, Motion Pictures, Radio, Television, Stage, Antique Automobiles and License Plates, Mechanical Music, Thomas Edison, and San Francisco. Now Charlotte and I are selling collectables from all.
It was not easy to accumulate a complete run of New Jersey automobile licenses from their onset up to the new national 6x12” standard in the 1950s and beyond. My collection was displayed on the walls of Yesteryear Museum outside Morristown, along with a different group of sample plates for the Bicentennial Year 1976 - at least those from states which issued such, and didn’t charge a fortune – most states proudly sent theirs proudly and gratis!
When we moved to Florida, the plates were in several heavy movers’ boxes, which were mixed in with scores of others for the move. It wasn’t until after we had changed from one storage place to another that we discovered that the movers brought only one box to us – infuriating, but too late to do anything about it! We will soon be offering many more plates up into the 1950s, when the new national standards set in. Keep watching! --- Lee Munsick

ABOUT US ---

Charlotte and Lee Munsick - Octogenarians on the Florida Treasure and Space Coast, we experience frequent power outages and strong storms which bring web, phone and PC problems. In our most recent relatively gentle hurricane we were without power for nearly a week – others for far more. Should we ever again be unable to ship or communicate promptly, please be patient and please do not advise . That would simply delay things and cause all involved additional difficulties. Thank you!
Years back we had no power or PC for over a month; after the recent hurricane just shy of that. The first time customers and could not contact us! cancelled everything; our Feedback rating died. When ‘live’ again, we contacted all buyers. Every buyer settled happily and received their purchases. We lost over 300 Feedback points – we’d have been way over 1000 long ago if not for that case. Fortunately, all that did not occur this year, but we’ve had PC difficulties to this date!
In 15 years on including moves from NJ to VA to FL we’ve had 3 harsh negative Feedbacks – two due to service shutdowns as above, and one because a buyer did not read or heed our information. His fault, but while 3 reps said we did everything correctly, eventually ruled against us and he caused our first Feedback loss because he forced PayPal to refund his payment. Fortunately, this never occurred again.
