This is a replica of the 1963 California manufacturer license plate, number 013, that was registered to the Ford Motor Company. It is a standard size 6 x 12 plate made of heavy gauge aluminum with lightly embossed numbers and letters.
Multiple sets of these yellow on black plates were issued. They were serialized beginning with 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D through 1X, 1Y 1Z and continuing with 2A, 2B, 2C and so forth. Some of these plates were provided to Shelby American Motors on the Mustangs that were delivered to Shelby under an agreement with Ford.
Some plates were put on new cars that Ford provided to executives, management personnel and writers who reviewed and published their findings in auto related magazines. In the 1960s these plates could be seen on California streets on Ford models of Mustang, Galaxie 500, Falcon, Fairlane and Thunderbird.
