Description:

Discovered at the 20th Anniversary Mopar Nationals, she was one of the last cars and had a huge “For Sale” sign on it, a 1976 Plymouth Gran Fury Sport Suburban station wagon. Imagine this gem in a huge 4th of July Parade….what’s more Americana than the Family Wagon??
SPECIFICS:
Very rare1976 Plymouth Gran Fury Sport Suburban 9-passenger station wagon.
20th Anniversary Mopar Nationals (entry sticker on windshield).
One of 1794 that were built that year. 1 of 122 with this engine option.
Fantastic survivor condition and ultimate Barn Find. I can say with confidence that the 33, xxx miles on the odometer is probably original. The car’s condition supports this unconditionally. But no hard documentation.
The VIN number, PP46N6Dxxxxxx, translates like this:
P= Plymouth
P= Premium trim level
46= 3 seat station wagon
N= 400 4 barrel, single exhaust (210 horse, $45 option)
6= 1976
D= Built in the Belvedere, Illinois plant
xxxxxxx= Build sequence number
Eggshell White with full Woodgrain Siding
Built on a 124-inch wheelbase with a shipping weight of 4975 lbs. and a base price of $5761. The car’s build date is July 19, 1976, which is pretty late for a 1976. Interesting fact….running down the assembly line, the driver’s side has chrome door lock knobs, passenger side has brown. Guess no one wanted to restock parts!
The wheels do not match the fender tag. The 15 x 6.5 Chrome Road wheels on the car in these pictures were not an available option on the wagons. They are however date coded 1976 and came off a ’76 Chrysler Newport. The original, rare and highly sought after 15x6½” station wagon wheels and correct hubcaps are included. The car has 4 Goodyear radials with less than 3000 miles, but they have been sitting for several years.
Model specific Disco/Indian/Southwest Chestnut seat upholstery on all 3 seats literally sparkles. The interior is 92% perfect. There is slight sun fading on one of the panels in the cargo area but I couldn’t get the camera to pick it up. The carpet is slightly fuzzed from those period plastic floor mats with the spikes (still has one!) and there are a couple half-inch scuffs in the headliner. Not bad for a nearly 12 foot by 6 foot interior. The full set of Samsonite luggage pictured in the back goes to the winning bidder!!
The clock doesn’t work, thus making the car literally timeless. The power window and defroster in the twin action tailgate work perfectly. Other options include AM/FM radio (works good), cruise and tilt/telescope wheel.
Original spare tire with the dealer’s inspection stamp still plainly visible. (Ned Adams Chrysler-Plymouth _ _ 4 E. Liberty St. Wooster, Ohio 44687). The jack and tire have never been touched. Included are the original, seemingly unused, manufacturer’s B (stamped “B”) set of keys on the salesman’s (Chuck Austin w/ his picture on one side and “Ned Adams Chrysler Plymouth 262-1010” on the other) giveaway key fob. Not original enough? On that key ring are also the 2 tiny manufacturer’s key cut code discs with “Record and Destroy” stamped on them. Ever seen one of those? How about BOTH of the originals for the car?
The body is 95% original showroom. Body shows the marginal build quality of Mopar in the mid-70’s, but it is seemingly all original right down to the paint. Has a soft dent over the left front wheel well about the size of a quarter that is nearly invisible under the woodgrain. There are a couple thin scratches in the otherwise beautiful, fade free vinyl woodgrain. There are some minor road rash paint chips along the rocker panels. That’s the list. Someone with a long weekend, good detailing skills could make this car truly astonishing. The car received a wax type undercoating when new.
Mechanical condition
: When she went into storage in 2009, she was running well. The car could use a carb balancing, the electric choke wire replaced and the timing fine-tuned. I would have this beauty transported, as she has been sitting for 6 years inside the garage. Even with fuel stabilizer, I would recommend the tank be dumped before starting her up.
Non-working air conditioner. Blows, but not cold. (It has been treated to a cheap 134A conversion that could use a couple can bump or a proper retrofit.)
The following upgrades were done between 2001 and 2006:** Mopar Performance electronic ignition system (The original Lean Burn system can work again by changing a couple wires and slipping in the original distributor). Installation included new plugs and wires and all maintenance items including transmission service. **A new roller timing set was installed. No more fiber gears. **Newly rebuilt Mopar specific Holly 650 spreadbore carb.
Brand new, NOS (THAT’S N-O-S!!) exhaust system less than 100 miles ago. See exhaust pre-installation pictures below. Note the tags. NOS!!
All the rest of the mechanics, suspension and drivetrain are original and in excellent 33, xxx mile condition. There are still supple 1976 date coded hoses on the engine.
I have saved the original ignition parts and Thermoquad carb and they go with the car. The original carb needs the usual Thermoquad rebuild. There is another correct date and application coded carb for parts or rebuild included as well.
The following literature will be included with the car: the owner’s manual package with warranty card, etc., a set of factory shop manuals in excellent condition, the 1976 Technical Service Bulletins book, a dealers parts book that is in fair condition, the common Plymouth line dealer’s brochure and a salesman’s Pocket Secretary and Technical Data Handbook.
If the reserve is met or someone uses Buy It Now, I will add the following literature to the above items, all in excellent condition:
**Another Technical Service Bulletins Book.
**Another Pocket Secretary.
**Another pair of Shop Manuals in excellent condition.
**Another Dealer Parts Book in excellent shape with a 1976 Direct Connection Performance Parts Catalog inside.
**Chrysler/ Plymouth Dealer’s Brochure.
**Hyper-rare Bicentennial Chrysler/Plymouth Dealer’s Brochure.
**A 1976 Paint Chip Chart.
**Plymouth Data Book and Car Selector Book.
**Plymouth Color and Trim Selector Book.
**Three books from Chrysler Corp. Training and Development Department, “Emissions Controls”, “Wiring Diagrams” and “Service Highlights”.
**Complete set of 1976 Passenger Car Microfiche.
**Rebate Program How-To folder featuring Joe Garagiola. (First year that manufacturers offered rebates—very historical! Poor Joe.)
**Extremely rare Chicago Auto Show Chrysler Corporation Press Kit.
**Chrysler/Plymouth 1976 Salesman’s Confidential Facts Pocket Folder with 6 booklets that contain prices, specs and packages.
**A Mopar cancelled-obsolete-superceded parts list loose-leaf binder dated July 1976. Incredible information!
**1976 Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth dealer giveaway Rand McNally Road Atlas.
**The rarest of all literature pieces: a 1976 MVMA (Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association) Specification Form for the 1976 Plymouth Gran Fury. What’s that? That is the “recipe” that manufacturers publish for each model they make and then register with the MVMA. The information in this document is simply wild and must be seen to be believed. And there is only one.
So there you have it. Want to bury the competition in the Mopar Survivor class at any show? Want that Summer family vacation ‘truckster’? Want a car that is a serious chick (guy?) magnet? Want a hyper rare but practical toy car? This is your car. Plymouth, the manufacturer, is dead. Big Gran Fury Sport Suburban station wagons would only be made one more year and there would be more than twice as many made (1977—3600 produced). The Bicentennial year was and is an important bookmark in the history of our country. Not only is this a rare car as cars go, but a unique representative of so much more.
I have tried to describe this car accurately. Yes, it really IS that good. But because it is almost 39 years old, (July 19 Birthday) I will give no warranty or guarantees. Pick up, transportation and the costs of shipping the car are the responsibility of the buyer. Seller will help as needed.
Bid high and bid often, …., bid drunk if you want, it’s a free country, but please follow the rules. The reserve will not be revealed.
I require a $500 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit by PayPal within 72 hours of the auction’s end and the balance within 14 days. Negative feedback will be levied for non-compliance. I support Ebay’s policies and conduct my auctions accordingly. Please feel free to e-mail with any questions. Thanks for looking and Good Luck! #barnfinds
