Plymouth motored into 1953 with an unbroken 25-year record as the number three U.S. automaker; however, a looming “price war” between Ford and Chevrolet would erode sales in 1954. In a classic case of evolution rather than revolution, Plymouth carefully refined its model line both aesthetically and mechanically, in preparation for the fully restyled 1955 lineup.
The 1953 would be the Final Year for the Cranbrook, Despite record sales. The six-cylinder engine was not far in horsepower from the chevrolet or ford v-8 engines but provided more economy at the gas pump.
The standard Plymouth engine remained the reliable 217 cubic-inch, six-cylinder engine, while the standard three-speed manual transmission was upgraded for quieter operation. Improvements included “splay-mounted” rear leaf springs, “Oriflow” shock absorbers and upgraded brake linings. Inside, a split front bench seat eased rear passenger entry. A minor facelift by Virgil Exner eliminated the bolt-on rear fenders, creating a modern profile. A new one-piece windshield and a revised grille were added, along with an expanded range of exterior colors.
This lovely, two-owner 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook Convertible, one of only 6, 301 produced has covered just 67, 885 miles in its 63 years of existence. The handsome Briggs coachwork displays a very nice cosmetic restoration, with very good paint, brightwork and glass noted. A new light blue top, wide whitewall tires, and wire wheels complement the exterior.
The beautiful Two-tone Blue interior with red piping is also completely restored to a high standard, featuring well-tailored leather upholstery, newer carpeting and new rubber floor mats. Interior options include a push-button radio and heater/defroster. The largely original engine is equipped with newer hoses, wires and battery, and is mated to a three-speed manual transmission.the Car has been converted to 12-volt for reliability but the original generator will come with car. The original, unrestored undercarriage is in good condition, displaying reasonable road use.
