1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe
A Solid First-Year Plymouth Convertible Sold
New Right Here in Augusta, GA
Once Refurbished but Never Fully Restored by a Teacher at Augusta Tech
Offered from a Private Collector out of 15 Years Ownership
A fun driver-quality head-turner, this 1949
Plymouth Special Deluxe has to the best of my ability to tell spent its
entire 66 years here in Augusta. Apparently sold new by Windom Josey which
was a Chrysler dealer in the day just a few miles from my office on US 1
in 1949, it has never left the Garden City its entire life - and it shows.
The car was repainted once during a refurbishment decades ago and remains
generally straight and solid to this day.
I have had affinity for these Plymouths since I handled one out of Bill
Pettit's estate some years ago, Bill had the duplicate to this car which
his family's Chrysler dealership had sold new and they later bought back, Bill having kept it until he died next to his Duesenbergs and other fine
cars. I can really see why he liked his as this one is no less lovable.
The car has benefitted from careful use and
was recently taken out of storage, serviced and had its hood and deck lid
repaired and refinished by Precision Automotive next door to my shop. The
hood hinges were also rebuilt by a MoPar specialist in New Hampshire as
they were severely worn. I have been driving the car the last few days to
run the cobwebs out and it now operates as it should once more.
I do not believe that any of the chrome or stainless
trim has ever been replated, it all shows uniform patina and still shines
up nicely.
The deck lid sits a bit proud of the bodywork
on the left but seals and latches properly. There is no apparent damage
here, likely it is just slightly bent due to people forcing it down over
the decades as the locking hinge is on this side.
Remnants of the original selling dealer's sticker
on the original rear bumper!
The lights and add-on turnsignals work as they
should, the blue dot third brake light is a nice addition within the trunk
handle!
As you can see, the panel fit is excellent throughout, typical of a good solid southern car.
The car drives better than most of these do
with modern whitewall radial tires all around.
This car gets more attention driving around
town than a modern exotic! Everyone loves it. The most recent owner has
used it in parades and weddings, the string hanging out beneath the front
bumper is a remnant of one of these events when a newly-minted bride and
groom tied some cans to the car as they went down the road!
The dashboard is also quite striking with nice
paint and chrome. Mileage on the odometer is presently 08654, I'm not sure
whether it just rolled over once or was zeroed out when the car was refurbished.
It will go up slightly during the listing as I'm still sorting it out a
bit. The interior was reupholstered a long time ago during its refurbishment.
The materials are not correct to period but it is a comfortable car to drive
nonetheless.
The hydro-electric power convertible top and
windows go down nicely and flush with the bodywork.
This is just a nice car to go cruising in and
keeps up with modern traffic just fine.
The top likewise has been replaced at some point
in the car's life and is very serviceable.
I put it up just for the purposes of these photos
- the back window is nice and clear...
This zips in nicely if you want to seal yourself
in.
The top on the Special Deluxe has nice lines, I prefer these to the Wayfarers with side curtains and the roadster top
as they are so much more functional for daily use.
Apologies for the dirty engine bay, remnants
of the dust from the paintwork to the hood still need to be cleaned up.
Note the Griffin aluminun radiator and dual tone horns!
A thorough cleaning and detailing wouldn't hurt, but the little 217.8 cubic inch, 95hp Spitfire Six runs very well as most
of them do, Chrysler used this engine from the 1920s until 1970 in marine
and agricultural applications (including portable air raid sirens!). A new
battery was installed recently. The car was converted to 12V and negative
ground with a Delcotron alternator at some point, which is nice as the headlights
actually work!
The car really needs nothing to be used regularly, which is a nice trait for an attractive old car to have!
The original VIN plate in the driver's door
jamb exhibits its age but has been there the whole time!
This appears also to have been there a while!

Georgia does not issue titles for cars more
than 15 years old unless they are newer than 1963 and a title comes in from
a title state. This car has not had a title, merely a registration, for
many, many years. You will receive a bill of sale and a transferable registration
document that you will take to your state's DMV to transfer ownership. I
am a car dealer but am not running this consignment through my books, merely
facilitating its sale on behalf of its owner on consignment.
Shipping needs to take place before the end
of December - I am happy to store the car here until that time and be available
to deliver the car to you or your shipper on receipt of full payment at
any time. If you require additional storage or assistance, please
let me know about this prior to placing your successful bid. For international
buyers, I will be happy to run the car down to the port of Savannah, GA
and deliver to Schumacher Cargo for $250 in my enclosed trailer. If you
are not too far away from Augusta and would like me to deliver the car to
you, I might be willing to do that as well, so
feel free to ask!
